3 Biggest Surprises
1. Southern Miss stunning unbeaten Houston in the league championship game, denying the Cougars a likely spot in a BCS bowl game.
2. The performance of the Houston defense, which made a slew of big plays all year, and was an unheralded key to the team’s 12-0 start.
3. SMU’s Iron Skillet upset of TCU, which would go on to win the Mountain West, and darn near cop a BCS bowl bid.
3 Biggest Disappointments
1. The incessant threat of member departures to the Big East, which was a thorn in the side of the conference all year.
2. The play of defending champ UCF, which began the year with such high hopes, yet ended it at 5-7 and out of the bowl picture.
3. Southern Miss’ hard-to-fathom losses to Marshall and UAB, which probably cost the school a shot at vying for an at-large BCS bowl berth.
Best C-USA Game of the Season
Oct. 1 SMU 40 … TCU 33 OT
The battle for the Iron Skillet has rarely been this entertaining. The Mustangs shocked the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth for one of their most important victories in a quarter-century. SMU blew a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter, only to prevail on J.J. McDermott’s fourth touchdown pass of the game, and a defensive stop in overtime.
Second Best Game: Sept. 17 Houston 35 … Louisiana Tech 34
Third Best Game: Sept. 10 at Marshall 34 ... ECU 27 OT
Coach of the Year - Larry Fedora, Southern Miss
2) Kevin Sumlin, Houston, 3) Bill Blankenship, Tulsa
Performances of the Year
1) Oct. 27 - In one of the most prolific games of his record-setting career, Houston QB Case Keenum strafed the Rice defense for nine touchdowns and 534 yards on 24-of-37 passing.
2) Nov. 19 - The nation’s leader in tackles for loss, Houston LB Sammy Brown, had 4.5 of them to go along with 10 tackles and three sacks in his team’s smothering of SMU.
3) Nov. 5 - In a theme that typified its championship season, Southern Miss scored four non-offensive touchdowns in a 48-28 win over East Carolina, two on interceptions, and a pair on special teams.
Top Freshman - LB Jeremy Grove, East Carolina
