Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III is having his parents interview agents with the strong likelihood he will declare himself eligible for the NFL draft, two sources said this week.

Griffin, a junior, has not indicated whether he will come out for the draft. The work by his parents is a way of protecting his interests in case he decides to return to Baylor. There has been some assumption that Griffin would turn pro after his spectacular 2011 season.

Griffin completed 72.4 percent of his passes for 3,998 yards, 36 touchdowns and only six interceptions as Baylor went 9-3. He also had nine rushing touchdowns and twice rushed for more than 100 yards as he helped the Bears qualify for the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29.

Numerous scouts and executives believe the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Griffin will be a high first-round draft pick. It’s anticipated that if Heisman runner-up Andrew Luck of Stanford goes No. 1 overall, Griffin will likely be selected by the Washington Redskins or Miami Dolphins. On Monday night, ESPN analyst and former NFL coach Jon Gruden said he would love to coach Griffin in the pros.

"You hear it a lot of places, but he’s a miniature Cam Newton," one scout said. "He’s a quarterback with the ability to run for 40 yards even when he’s not looking to run. … His intangibles are off the charts, really smart, great family, the whole thing."

The only concerns about Griffin are whether he is legitimately 6-2 and whether his body is big enough to take an NFL pounding. But those issues are not expected to be significant enough to water down his stock.

"Just put him down for the first round," an NFL team executive said.

Interesting with the height issue. He stood right next to Andrew Luck at the Heisman awards and they were even in height.

he would be a fool to not evaluate the risk/reward of top draft pick money. you can always go back to school.

By all accounts, RGIII is a very smart young man (in addition to being an amazing football player).

I know he can buy insurance that would set him up financially for life, but he has a college degree and a Heisman Trophy, and he is playing in a conference that Baylor won't win next year, either. Why come back? A serious injury could cost him millions and a chance to make a run at a long, successful pro career.

Considering he'll have his degree, this (agent interviewing) is a no-brainer. It's time to go to the NFL.

Especially because he doesn't want to deal with the pain he'll face from Ja'Gared Davis and Stephon Sanders! :)

Good knowing you - RGIII. I guess you will only be able to imagine the misery that would have come your way had you stayed and experienced the Mustang Defense.
