BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- SMU athletic director Steve Orsini said Wednesday that coach June Jones and the school's supporters continue to work on moving forward from Jones' very public near-departure for Arizona State last month.

"Is it completed? No," Orsini said. "But we work on it every day. ... I'm very optimistic, but it is a process."

Orsini credited Jones' willingness to address questions and his public recommitment to SMU for the ability to turn the page. Orsini said he and Jones regularly discuss the issue and hope to turn it into something positive.

It's crucial as SMU hopes to build attendance and the program.

"We need to send the right message to fans," Orsini said. "We need their support, we can't do this in a vacuum."

Interesting comments but I'm not exactly sure how I would interpret them.

I'm glad to know this isn't being swept under the carpet. It is a serious issue, JJ embarrassed and angered a lot of people, and SO is correct in continuing this conversation with him.

Continuing conversations about what? A contract extension?

about taking that next step? recruiting going in to the Big east? Jason Phillips as HCIW?

I am not sure we want to officially name him as HCIW. IIRC there are some major restrictions on that position regarding recruiting. Perhaps Stallion can refresh us as to what those are- if any.

GO PONIES!!!

My bet is Jones is gone after the bowl game, and his replacement is already lined up.

As far as Jones, I would think you either do an " easy out" contract extension and start preparing for life without him, or you do a Bobby Petrino contract with a $10,000,000 buy out to assure he will stay. I will leave that decision to the people paying the tab.

yeah, i was just spitballing. Personally, if JJ left I think we could do much better than JP. But he would kill it on the recruiting trail for us.

I'm going to give a lot less than usual next football season. I'm going to give it ($$) to other places like medical research and care, homeless shelters and other schools that family members are attending.

When I'm ready to move on I'm serious.

"Maybe it leaves an invisible scar...Oh, I could hurt you now...Listen...you just don't get it do you."
