DALLAS (SMU) - When SMU student-athletes hit the field next fall, they will sport a new mark in addition to the classic running pony logo - a Nike Swoosh. SMU Athletics and Nike have entered into a five-year agreement that will make Nike the official provider of apparel, footwear and equipment for the Mustangs. The agreement will be effective beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

"We are excited to announce this partnership between SMU Athletics and Nike," stated Director of Athletics Steve Orsini. "Nike is a world leader in athletic apparel and equipment, and this agreement links SMU Athletics with that prestigious brand. We have raised the profile of SMU Athletics to a high level over the past few years and this commitment by Nike only reinforces that fact. With our impending move to the BIG EAST, we will continue to rise as we move towards our goal of becoming top-25 in everything we do."

"Partnering with elite organizations such as SMU allows Nike to continue to help build better athletes by pushing innovation forward," said Morgan Shaw, Nike Communications. "Our goal is to deliver unparalleled performance benefits through footwear, apparel and equipment by listening to the voice of the athlete. To that end, it is a privilege to work with such a strong, successful athletic organization."

Actually, like Adidas, they have a similar shirt already. Button Down short sleeve shirt. I saw one at Nordstrom not long ago.

Disagree. Soon we will be wearing hideous jerseys similar to TCU

pro combat jerseys would solve some of our recruiting problems, and I am being serious.

This is true. I just loved the classic look. As long as we win I guess I don't care too much what we wear

I prefer a company that will actually care about us. Neither Adidas or Nike give a poo. I'm massively biased, though

I like the move to Nike. Sure, it will mean we probably wear some garish pro-combat uniform once in a while, but in general the better-looking uniforms in college football seem to be Nike-made. Having gone to three straight bowls and joining the Big East should make Nike give us a little more attention.

The fit of our adidas football unis this year was atrocious. I realize football jerseys are now skin-tight no longer have real sleeves, but ours looked like they used less material to save money. The gaping arm holes, where the jersey should come together over the shoulder, were particularly bad. Texas A&M is also an addidas school and their unis seemed to fit them properly. Maybe bigger schools get better tailoring?

Switching to Nike means (hopefully) we may cut down to just two or three stripes on the sleeves, instead of the multitude of stripes we have now. That's a good thing.

And in general I think Nike markets its schools' products better. We should be able to purchase more and better Nike-made SMU clothing, caps and replica jerseys in the future. That is, if we can get stores (including the SMU Bookstore) to stock it. The Nike name might open a few retailers' doors, but people need to buy the stuff to really make Nike take notice. In my experience, when quality SMU apparel is made available and in popular sizes (not just S, M and L), it usually sells.

I would actually like it if we kept it simple and went back to the jerseys we had with Cavan when Ford Stadium first opened

This is great news, get over the fact that you might not like the look of the uniforms. Recruits love this stuff and that is all that matters.
