Clarification re. Gilbert

With Padron transferring, our current QB depth chart is Steven Kaiser, Conner Preston, and whoever we can sign to an LOI this week. That strikes me as a very dubious situation going into next year. June and his staff are not stupid. Nor are they pining for a 1-11 season. So I'm thinking they would not have given Padron his release unless they felt like they had a potentially better option going into next season.
Enter Garret Gilbert. Now I have read several threads on this board that indicate he would definitely have to sit out next season. I have read other threads that indicate he might be able to play without sitting out a year. By giving Padron his release, it appears the coaching staff thinks they can suit up Gilbert right away.
So which is it? Can Gilbert play next season? If so, under what circumstances? I can't think of any situation in which a straight transfer wouldn't have to sit out. Just looking for guidance from people who know more about the rules than I do.

I have read he is graduating this spring. Meaning he can play immediately if he enrolls in grad school. At least I think thats how it works.

It all deals with a loophole in the transfer rule. If a player graduates, then he can transfer and be immediately eligible (originally this was for a situation when a player wanted to earn a masters in something not offered at the original school, not sure if that is still the case, I would assume no or he will just find something at smu that texas doesn't have). As far as his medical redshirt...he can't apply for that until he is out of eligibility so we won't know if he'll be here for one or more seasons until after next year.

Of course, the big risk is that he could transfer to any school in the country once he graduates. Being able to play next year might make him more attractive to various schools who feel they need a QB for the 2012 season. He is not bound to SMU right now.
So, he will be able to play and we have to hope that he continues to want to play here. I have not heard anything saying he is looking at other places, but you never know who might decide they could use him and might sound interesting to him.

So assuming Gilbert can graduate from UT in May, enroll at SMU, and then play in the fall, I guess spring ball is out. That would only give him summer workouts and August camp to learn the offense. Yikes. I'm thinking the run n' shoot is quite a bit different than anything he ran at UT.

There is, of course, the possibility that June thinks Connor Preston, with a full RS year under his belt is a better candidate than Padron, and that GG is just a potential bonus worth giving a chance, but not "plan A".
Or there is the possibility that June doesn't think GG or Preston is a better choice than Padron, but that Padron is unhappy enough to not play next year even if he isn't given release, or that he'd play intentionally bad.

Didn't GG run something similar to our offense in high school, or did I just make that up?

One of the lingering questions in my mind is the status of KP's injury? Is his injury going to be a big question mark or limiting factor for the rest of his career? Why is KP seeking to transfer when it would appear that he was ready to become the starter again? Is KP's relationship with JJ now so strained, because of his benching without being given any chance to redeem himself last season, that he believed he could no longer trust or take the chance to stay and compete for the starting job? I would like someone to put some real pieces into the puzzle before I understand exactly what has happened to an apparent loyal warrior.

According to an earlier thread, his high school offense is basically a better version of the RNS in every way shape and form.
Plus the kid is a pretty darn good player. He will be fine. I will gladly go with talent over mastery of an outdated offense that every defense knows how to defend...

yes GG ran a spread offense in highschool, and I believe he is graduating from UT and enrolling in a program at SMU not offered at UT which should make him eligible for next year

assuming this is a done deal, I'm going to assume this is all about wanting to play for JJ and Morrison and "re-develop" as QB looking for a shot at an NFL career
Sure hope it works out because it will give Preston and Burcham time to learn and grow so they can compete for the job once Gilbert finishes up
Not a bad deal to earn a graduate degree from SMU as a fall back, either

Much, much better than a masters from whoren U. in mental masturbation (one of their more popular courses for jocks).

funny....
some say Gilbert made lots of mistakes @ UT...basically he is no good
then others say "well if he graduates somebody might snatch him away"
if he stays he sucks & if he goes we lose him becuzz he was good & got a better offer!
so in other words....lets cover the "we're screwed no matter what happens".

Running a pro style spread is different than the style of qb for UT's offense. I hope we get him and I hope he is able to learn enough about SMU's offense to be effective. As we all know, SMU runs a very sophisticated style of spread. I doubt he will be able to learn much about it before he is actually enrolled.
