Same old coach

Stallion and others who ridicule Jones for his network recruiting methods might want to consider the positive. Jones, a great man, loyal friend and respected coach seems to have powerful influence among the best in the business.

Sterling Moore.. "I was just hoping I’d get another opportunity," he said. "I called [SMU coach June Jones] as soon as I got cut and he told me not to worry about it and that I was good enough to play in this league. I’m sure he put some calls out, which has something to do with me being here. All I needed was an opportunity."

I don't think anyone criticizes the fact that June has friends in NFL high places. And it should be a HUGE recruiting bonus to be able to tell young men that if they come to SMU, those connections can open doors that would be closed to them otherwise.

The criticism is that those connections, and that ability do not seem to be making the expected impact on the recruiting classes.

"It was crazy because I was committed up until two weeks before Signing Day, when SMU came calling," Moore said. "If I didn't get my offer from SMU on my visit, I was supposed to leave for UMass the following Tuesday. I was very close to going."

Unfortunately, JJ's style of rockin' chair recruiting isn't gonna cut it in the BEAST.
