Finding workable National Play-off for College FB has been elusive and the Big Ten has been more reluctant than most. However, Chicago Tribune is reporting interest by the BiG in a four team play-off:

"Semifinals would be played on college campus of higher seed; title game could be bid out, like Super Bowl". Note the probable reduction of bowls and a minimum number of wins, i.e. 7.

I sense that this fall may be the time to make a change for 2014 season, due to new conference realignments and the concerns this year. Perhaps ... "the moving up the BCS title game? Alabama's trouncing of LSU took place Jan. 9, a day after the NFL's wild-card weekend. Fourteen percent of the country tuned in, marking the third-lowest rating in the 14 years of the BCS."

I think it'd be cool, if you're going to do a 4 team playoff, to have the semis on New Year's Day and then the National Championship on the week in between the AFC/NFC Championships and the Super Bowl. Also, push signing day back until after the Super Bowl. I would like to see the sanctity of the bowls perserved, however, and rotate the two semifinal games between one of the four sites each year (Pasadena, Glendale, New Orleans, Miami).

I love how it's Big Ten "may" be open to a playoff- and on the terms that the games would be played at campus sites. Yeah, I really want to go to Ann Arbor or Madison in January. It's like they're looking for any advantage they can get, given their history of being smoked in BCS games

ESPN recap of Big Ten discussions.

As a Midwesterner, the concept that neutral fields must always be in the Sun Belt it worthy of challenge. Big Ten wants to increase the probabilities that one of their teams is in the hunt and will not be at a locaton disadvantage seems reasonable to gain their support, which is important to enable a change. Also, the clear implication is that the BCS cartel and money men will lose vs. NCAA regaining a legitimate role at the table.
