"Danny told me that he’s not committed to our program, that he’s not ‘all in.’ I want what’s best for all of our players. Danny wants a fresh start elsewhere. I wish him well."

Those close to the player -- who was the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman -- said Wisconsin, Stanford, Michigan State and Vanderbilt could be transfer options. It's not known whether those schools are interested.

O'Brien has remained close with former Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin, now Vanderbilt's head coach, and Maryland would be interested to learn if the two have been in touch.

O'Brien was in class early Monday afternoon but was working on a statement for the media that was expected to be released later in the day.

A dozen players with eligibility have left Maryland since the season ended. Thirteen with remaining eligibility had left before the season.

O'Brien had met with Edsall last week but had withheld making a final decision until this week.

Edsall's response ("I'm disappointed") was different than his response when other players left. The coach has usually simply wished the player well.

O'Brien says he's on track to graduate in the spring and so he could enroll in a graduate program at another school and play right away. He has two seasons of eligibility left.

Edsall said of Garcia: "Max showed great promise. But after two seasons in College Park, Max is still homesick. He wants to transfer to a school closer to home (Norcross, Ga.) so his family can see him play."

The coach said of Rowson: "Mario wants to play defensive back. Trouble is, we see Mario as a linebacker. I wish Mario well, wherever he decides to play."

The news of Maryland's three transfers comes three days after the Terps announced the signing of highly touted receiver Stefon Diggs, who joins running back and fellow Good Counsel star Wes Brown in Maryland's recruiting class.

I am surprised that there has been no comment on MD losing 13 guys to transfer from last fall's team including a highly regarded QB. I know a UConn player who graduates this spring who played for Edsall and characterizes Edsall as a good coach and well liked person. Question is why this MD team failed to perform last season and why all the defections of kids who were playing? There seems to be chaois and big problems with that program. Change is what the UnderArmour brothers wanted in the MD program and that is what they are getting.
