Former SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell transferred to Eastern Washington after losing his starting job during the 2009 season.

It worked out well for Mitchell, who won a Football Championship Subdivision national championship in 2010 and was one of nation's premier passers in 2011.

Kyle Padron is the latest SMU quarterback to transfer -- he's still looking for a home -- after losing his starting job during the 2011 season.

There's nothing wrong with that.

If it doesn't work out for a student-athlete at a program, and he has handled his business in the classroom and been a positive influence on the football program, then there's no good reason for a head coach to hinder that kid from transferring.

Give SMU coach June Jones a handclap because he gets it. Texas coach Mack Brown, too.

Kansas coach Charlie Weis doesn't.

Selfish, egotistical dudes like Weis rarely do because everything must revolve around them.

For example, Weis has recruited Dayne Crist, who played for him at Notre Dame, to join the Jayhawks for his last season of eligibility. We all know he's going to start this year.

Weis has recruited BYU transfer Jake Heaps to be his starter in 2013, which is why Brock Berglund, who enrolled in the spring, wanted to transfer.

At first, Weis wouldn't give Berglund his release.

Ok, the Weis/Berglund story is total BS. Berglund conducted his business via e-mail and lawyers and Weis (and KU as a whole) made the little num-nut be a man and face the coaches face-to-face. Not a character flaw on Weis' part whatsoever.

Weis has a decided schematic advantage over character flaws.

As much as I dislike Jean-Jacques Taylor from his DMN stint....I believe his story to be correct and Weis gets no exemption.

Ponyscott, you're a good dude, but Jean-Jacques Taylor is a complete f'ing moron if he thinks the Berg matter was a "coach not releasing a player". Berg was a complete tool, and had his attorney e-mail KU informing him of his transfer. The ENTIRE KU AD wanted this spoiled brat to face the music and face the coaches. I'm sure there are valid reasons to criticize Weis, but this isn't one. KU shed 10 players this year, and the other 9 that weren't f-nuts all got his immediate release from KU. Know the facts...

If someone has made a conscious decision that he does not want to be there, why does he have to "face the music and face the coaches". sounds like the coaches want to berate and denigrate the player before letting him go. Sounds like he made the decision he did because he knew what the coaches reaction would be. KU sucks on many levels.

Wow, you don't think a school that stood by a player after facing assault charges and never contributed to the team deserves more than an f-you very much e-mail from the kid? Regardless, my point was the story has the context of the situation COMPLETELY wrong.

For a coach who continually sought to further his education by transferring ....oregon,hawaii, portland st, new york regents online..would be diengenious to not allow others to do the same. Still not right coaches can leave and coach next year and players sit out unless already graduated or smaller school or ncaa approval.

Until he was convicted, he deserved the benefit of the doubt. As a former DA and former criminal defense attorney, I can say with experience that the person charged in a fight is often the winner. Sometimes that is the right thing. Sometimes the "victim" started it and the "winner" was defending himself.

Given the plea agreement he got (deferred adjudication), it is likely the case against him was extremely weak.

There is no reason that he needed to meet with Weis or any member of his staff. He certainly didn't owe Weis anything.

All due respect, what a pile of horse crap. KU invested in his education (as short as it may have been), did everything they could do to support him, etc. All of the other kids that left KU this spring all faced the Coaching staff except for one. That punk didn't deserve an exception. They weren't asking him to clean every toilet on campus, just visit with the coaches. Instead, they got a FU e-mail from his lawyer. Good luck to the program that gets that little [deleted] head case.
