TCU problems = bad for SMU

TCU's success was the model. Don't you think the R. Gerald Turners, the Spanish professors, and others who have various levels of anti-sports mentality will use this to attack?

Probably.

Same area, small private school, big-time football, etc...

Hopefully they'll just beef up drug screening - instead of taking a vote whether to continue with football...

No. It's not like they're going on probation or anything. They just had a bunch of players who liked to get high.

i don't think "organize a football team drug ring" is part of the model SMU is following. patterson kept that part under wraps til today.

The former Spanish department used to be very Pro-that.

Easy solution, drug tests before Spring and Fall practice. Fail? Meet with Coach and put on a remedial course or team suspension.

I don't think this has anything to do with SMU football. Except maybe the fact that our players better learn from this if there are some bad apples

There is nothing 'good' that comes out of the short or long term for SMU regarding the drug/weapons bust(s) in Ft. Worth...this isn't a case of 'there but for the grace of God go I' or any other platitude.

Lives were ruined today ( and months ago by poor decisions). A program that we as SMU fans would love to match has taken a gut punch. All jokes of Coach Patterson aside, he and the university are left in a position to react rather than proactively prepare for a day like today.

The earlier drug test (February 1) indicates folks in control were suspicious or aware of an issue. The interesting thing going forward will be what the university chooses to do now. I will bet that it is far more draconian than SMU fans would believe.

No joy here at watching others struggle...those folks involved should face the full measure of the law, but deserve my pity, not my derision or self-righteous contempt.

Hope TCU and SMU get their respective houses in order, as well as these students and their families.
My prayers from the sidelines will be that all those things occur.

I'm pretty confident that the way June and Fatterson run a program are different enough that this won't be a problem for SMU

You would have to be naive to think that similar acts do not happen at SMU...hope this cleans up colleges everywhere.

1. RGT is NOT anti-sports.

2. The same model still holds. Nobody builds a success and does it under the assumption that it's people are going to get busted for drugs. This doesn't affect us.

I completely disagree with the first post. This has absolutely nothing to do with SMU. They lose 3 big players for them that I hope helps us on the field next year. Other than that, it's a damn shame for TCU. That's about where it starts and stops for me. Pony up!

I agree with last post. No way in hell is this bad for SMU. TCU is dirty in more ways than one. I hope they are ready for their [deleted] pounding next year.

I think you guys are viewing it wrong. A very similar institution, who proved to us winning is possible and without we may not have survived after bennett, is going down hard fir corruption and criminal athletes, the #1 reason for anti-athletics thought.

This doesn't kill our program but it could certainly be hurt us if things go the wrong way there.

I still don't get why it hurts us. We have nothing to do with TCU except that we are both small private schools.
