The SMU football team’s spring workouts are two days old. Some notes:
• Three players have moved positions: Jordan Favreau has moved back to the offensive line and worked Monday at guard; Chayse Joubert, who moved to defensive back last year, is back at wide receiver; Austin Fuller, who transferred to SMU after starting his college career as a wide receiver at Virginia Tech, was moved back to wide receiver after being moved briefly to safety over the offseason.
• Several players sat out with injuries, including running back Zach Line (foot), defensive end Kevin Grenier (labrum), defensive end Beau Barnes (labrum) and offensive tackle Ben Gottschalk (back).
• In attendance at practice: former SMU offensive lineman (and current NFL draft prospect) Kelvin Beachum, Jr., who showed up in shorts and cleats "in case I need to show something to some of the young players." Beachum said he thinks the Mustangs’ offensive line will exceed expectations in 2012.
• Also in attendance: about two dozen high school coaches.
• Among those playing hurt: defensive coordinator Tom Mason, who had his left arm in a sling because of a shoulder injury.
• Monday marked the first SMU practice for new assistant coaches Jason Phillips (wide receivers) and Bob Palcic (offensive line).
• Three players will compete for the punting job: veteran Mike Loftus and freshmen Derek Longoria, who sat out the 2011 season as a greyshirt, and Matt Medcalf, of Ada, Okla. Joining Loftus and veteran Chase Hover in the competition for the placekicking job is Cody Rademacher, a sophomore transfer from Air Force.
