J.R. RICHARDSON: Eager to stake his claim

As a true freshman, J.R. Richardson was relegated largely to the role of kickoff returner. He performed admirably, but at his primary position - cornerback - he was one of several backups waiting his turn. With the departure of 2011 senior Richard Crawford, Richardson worked with the first-team defense in spring workouts, and earned rave reviews. Richardson visited with PonyFans.com to discuss what it was like to wait his turn, the strengths of his game and his mental approach to playing the position that often is described as being "on an island."

Enjoy!

Excellent story, and now I'm more eager than before to see Richardson play. I had heard he was tearing it up in practice all year, and now I'm looking forward to seeing him do it in games.

Lets remember the former Rivals 3 Star DB also had an offer from Michigan, but came to SMU because he knows Coach Mason and his staff are some of the best college defensive coaches around.

I like corners with that kind of swagger, even when they haven't played enough to show it. Some guys are good and they know it. Hopefully he's one of them.

Great story.
