What is/was the cause of the SMU-TCU rivalry? Just regional or something with history behind it?

and also, why are UNT fans always so butthurt and why do I never see anything but bashing SMU and TCU from them?

I'm new to being a fan, bout a year of following SMU now, even stopped following MSU.

SMU and TCU were the 2 premiere programs of the SWC in the early days. It was a nationally relevant rivalry as it helped determine the national championship and landed one of the teams in a premiere bowl game such as the Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl. Proximity helped amplify it as well as the similarity between the two schools.

UNT fans are butthurt because they go to a glorified community college but cannot accept their school is garbage*. Also, it is where all the weird Goth/emo/whatever they have these days go to school.

*Except the jazz music program which is world class, and the RTF program which is solid.

TCU/SMU rivalry was also an extention of the competition between Ft. Worth and Dallas. The old Ft. Worth mayor, Amon Carter would always carry a sack lunch to meetings in Dallas, so he wouldn't have to eat here. The real fight began over rail, then to airports. Dallas had Love Field, then Ft. Worth built Amon Carter, near DFW, but no one came, including the airlines. To this day, Dallas firms have better luck doing business in NYC or LA than Ft. Worth.

It's kind of like a gay marraige, where TCU is the man and SMU is the woman. It really makes sense when you think about it, because so many of us at SMU these days are soft and feminine, and TCU generally takes us out to the woodshed whenever we meet.

UNT is like the macho native Texan who looks down on us and laughs at our "non-Texan like" femininity. I really dread it when we play either one of them.

They're both just too macho for us, and the size, potential, and academic excellence at UNT is just plain intimidating. We just need to start recruiting more macho native Texans around here if we're going to compete with those two. We're just too soft.

Yes. I am sure it is our low self esteemed NTSU fan that has now another to add to his multiple names.

I've often wondered why they dropped the "State", instead of "North" from NTSU. Shouldn't they really be angered by Texas State University not TCU or SMU?
