Even if you aren't a professional wrestling fan, you will probably recognize Hacksaw Jim Duggan. He's the guy with the goofy grin, carrying a 2-by-4 to the ring. His patriotic attitude and enthusiasm made him a favorite among fans everywhere.

In Hacksaw: The Jim Duggan Story, Duggan and co-author Scott E. Williams describe the life and times of this wrestling superstar.

Born in upstate New York, Duggan firmly believed he was destined for football. After playing for Southern Methodist University, he landed a spot with the Atlanta Falcons, but a knee injury forced him to leave the team after one season.

Uncertain of his future, Duggan foundered before finding his true calling. Chance encounters with the Von Erichs and others led to him to the world of professional wrestling.

Duggan was one great teammate. Funny, friendly, hardworking and totally intense on the field. Not a cheap shot artist or anything like that, just hard nose football. He comes around from time to time and is very approachable. Duggan’s sense of humor made him perfect for the entertainment field. I bet his book is worth the read. Wonder if he will come to SMU and do an autograph signing?

Used to play poker with Jim and others in Boaz. You had to learn how to win without winning too well. A lot of great times, and you're right, Jim was a lot of fun. I'll bet his stories are even better. I'll have to check out that book.

I still think it is funny that he got busted smoking weed with the Iron Sheik.

That was about the time I realized that Ras-ling wasn't real. On Saturday, my dad would let me stay up late to watch Saturday Night Wrestling. Bruiser Brody was my favorite.

Bruiser Brody of West Texas State U. What was it about WTSU football that it bred so many rasslers?

Duggan was happy as a circus bear and just as deadly. Henry Sheppard could pin him though.

So far as Jim Dugan is concerned, didn't he wrestle in HS and make it to the state final?

It will be an interesting book to read. Maybe has some insight about his opinion of Dave Smith as head football coach.
