Stephen Kaiser Transferring?

I noticed last night on twitter that EJ Holland reported that Stephen Kaiser is transferring to Missouri State. We all know that Gilbert is the expected starter, but at least now there will be no debate over who the number 2 QB will be this year. Although, I am not too concerned with losing Kaiser because I really never thought he was anything that special, it does seem a little troubling that a QB guru like June Jones has now had numerous QB's transfer away in just a few years. We have yet to see a qb truly develop in this system as we have yet to have a starting qb play for more than a season and a half.

he knows that since he's 3rd and maybe 4th on the depth chart, he's not going to see the field during his time here. i don't see this one as a JJ casualty.

Jones has always said that he wants 6 QBs on campus, and that he will recruit a QB every year. Always redshirt the QB, so that gives you 5 on scholarship and one walkon.
There will always be QBs transferring out under Jones. Every QB that is a decent recruit goes to college wanting to start. When they see that it isn't going to happen, they are going to leave.
Ideally, you would want to replace those kids with JUCOs to fill the gaps; however, we haven't been able to recruit highly regarded JUCO QBs (although we obviously did land a high quality transfer). So, instead, we have had to use more preferred walkons to build the depth.
Hopefully we can attract a good JUCO QB this year if GG has a good season.
FYI, I am guessing that Jones knew Kaiser was probably going to transfer and that is why he gave him a series in the bowl game, as a thanks for the hard work.

Wasn't he the one who June said would be a number 1 draft choice based on his skills at the time on his signing day?

Pretty shocking SMU has signed so few players in Texas with south pacific family backgrounds like around the mid-cities area and no qbs who have had consistent results from Texas....except for Bo after he left. Is the media hype about qb gurus, run and shoot and recruiting just that although winning ways are returning?

Of course JJ Mac was also a transfer. He came in as a back up, so he stayed. You can't expect a QB with talent/ego, but no chance of starting to hang around, not with so many professional opportunities out there. NFL, Canada, Europe. Also, Jones is certainly particular about the kind of kids he recruits at that position to fit his mold. UT has had its share of transfers too. Recently, Kinne and Gilbert, high profile guys. I doubt it's only SMU.

June seems to be the only guy who thought these QB busts were special.

Don't mean to rain on the June-bashing parade, but scout seems to think Colorado, Colorado State and Wisconsin also offered Kaiser. Every coach is right on some, wrong on others. Players, especially quarterbacks, are competitive guys, so it's not unusual for quarterbacks to transfer in an effort to find a place to play. Let's wish Steve well and move on.

Seemingly the other schools thought these guys can perform as well...Because QB don't tend to come out of games compared to other players, only one gets the reps and the playing time. It can be difficult so QB's probably transfer more than the average FB player. One can name a bunch of QB's that moved around and yet found success at other schools, some from SMU but others from Miami, U of Michigan, etc...it happens

SK: had two hard bouts with Mono, and I don’t think he was ever at 100% while he was here. He may have been a little closer to his form these past few months. But, his inability to practice, no matter how much film you watch, put him behind the “Eight Ball” grasping the system, add that to the physical challenge of bouncing back from Mono … that’s a tough combination … and he is now going into his Junior year. He wants some PT, and with GG and a “Red Shirt Freshman” CP in the stable, he might not like his odds. He may have been everything JJ said about him coming out of high school. But, unfortunate circumstances put an unfortunate twist to his story … it can still happen for him, and I hope is does.
The QB position is probably the most volatile in regards to transfer in/transfer out. Every school deals with it esp. at the D1 level. Some of the names that have been thrown out FYI with UT (Kinne and GG … you can add Snead to that list, who went on to start at Ole-Miss). It’s a one and done position. What I mean, even if you are 2nd and sometimes 3rd on the depth chart at say (LB, D-Line, RB etc.), you know you are still going to get game PT nearly every weekend. Thus, the opp to show your stuff, and possibly bust the starting line-up is always present … not normally so at the QB spot.
I know there is an anti JJ sentiment for some on this board (I’m not going there … although I do like and support him) … but the QB scuffle has been going on for years at Schools (again, esp. D1), and it will continue. It’s a function of the position and those who play it, and the fact that they want to play … not coach Jones. The QB spot is arguably the most important on the field (esp. in JJ’s offense), coaches always look to raise the bar … if not at the starter spot, certainly the back-ups. Because of that, players move. The fact that you trade-in your Porsche for a Ferrari, does not mean you don’t like/love your Porsche and its driving experience …. May be a bad analogy (I hope you get the point), I’m sorry if I offended any Porsche owners.

June hasn't been right on a QB here yet, odd since QBs are his specialty. How many more can he miss on and still be considered a QB guru?

Hope he starts wherever he goes.
I'd like to know how he plays CFB.

Lots. June is an established guru. I'm pretty sure you'll be counting though.

Who is now our 3rd string QB? Burcham?
