Makes perfect sense and glad to see that decision made before Fall Camp. Hopefully GG can impress enough to get CP and GK into some games with more than mop up time so they are truly prepared in case... Also I wonder if starting out first team wasn't part of the SMU transfer deal?

Says right out of the gate that he goes in to camp as the starter, but stops short of saying he will start. Pretty much everyone assumes he will and should start, but it sounds like June is indicating that GG starts camp as the starter.

While I fully expect GG to be the starter by the time the season starts, it is weird to me that he could be given the nod before ever stepping onto the SMU practice field. How do you think that plays with CP and GK?

Preston and Krstich had the spring to distinguish themselves and failed to do so. There's still the backup job to fight for in which case they'd be a Gilbert injury away from starting.

More and more coaches are doing that these days, including NFL teams (Colts, Redskins) with rookies. I would bet Preston and Krstich have had sit-downs with the coaches and knew this would happen before Gilbert even arrived. They can compete with Burcham and Cassel for the job after Gilbert is done on the Hilltop.

Garrett Gilbert is the starter - no need to split hairs and diagram sentences.

No, I don't think he would have transferred to any school without some assurance for the starting position. Probably why Kyle decided to transfer, which I believe was the right decision for his future.
