An injury suffered in high school has freshman defensive end Brian Cramer headed to the operating table, and has put his 2012 season in jeopardy.

This is a real shame, but it could be a blessing in disguise if he can grow in to his frame while getting healthy. Good luck, Brian. Come back bigger and stronger.

I hope it is not career ending.

A career-ending torn meniscus? No way. Lots of players have them and get through them just fine.
Thanks for the info, Pride.

He just got through with shoulder surgery and now surgery to deal with his meniscus. Greyshirt.

He could now greyshirt which would open up a last minute transfer (if we aren't over 25 yet). Perhaps this was anticipated an spot is already spoken for

Probably a stupid question (yes there is such a thing) but can you greyshirt after enrolling? He is in summer school now.

I believe so. Greyshirts sometimes start summer school and then go home for a semester with a class or two out of the way.

Thanks. Seems like they would lose time since it is 5 to play 4 from when you start school.

I stand corrected. Thanks to legislation proposed by the SEC, the NCAA changed the rule this year.
It used to be that a student-athlete could enroll in summer classes and then go home for the fall semester as a greyshirt, like Derek Longoria did last season. However, that has changed this year, so that when a student-athlete enrolls in any class, he automatically counts against that school's 25-player scholarship limit for the year, and once that has kicked in, there is no reason (in terms of roster management) to greyshirt.
Under that logic, since Cramer already is enrolled in summer classes, there would be no reason to greyshirt him. He can still redshirt, and his injury makes that likely.

So the NCAA changed another rule just to screw us. Thanks for nothing, NCAA.
