BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU has dismissed Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu from its football program for violating school and team rules.

A source told ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday that Mathieu has been looking for a new school to play for this season.

Last season Mathieu was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's best defensive player.

The junior defensive back nicknamed Honey Badger was the surprising Heisman Trophy candidate last season as the Tigers won the Southeastern Conference championship and reached the BCS title game. LSU lost the championship 21-0 to Alabama.

At a news conference Friday, coach Les Miles would not specify the reason Mathieu was kicked off the team.

Not every day you see a Heisman Finalist booted from his team.

Got to hand it to LSU for sticking to their guns, unlike TCU.

For all you self righteous holier than thou people on the board this probably was not a first time violation. Had it been a first time violation he probably would have been on the team.

It is hard to stop playing NCAA 13 with RGIII as your QB.

He was suspended for a game last year for using synthetic weed. So no this was not his first offense and most likely it was a third or fourth offense.

i'm still blown away with the "at TCU, the penaly for the first offense should be as severe as that for the second, third or fourth at other colleges"' argument.

Pachall failed one test. yes, he's stupid for doing all the other stuff he admitted to, but he still failed one drug test (as far as we know and are led to believe). why should GP go against the school's own policy and bring down more than the policy that was approved by the school's board? ridiculous argument. yes, i'd love to see him suspended for the sheer fact that i can't stand TCU, but GP has no basis for doing so.

Pachall failed one test that we know of. I find it hard to believe any athlete who gets busted (for drugs or anything else) and offers the "what bad luck ... this is the first time I have ever tried it!" excuse.

so if he failed one test, you have to assume that he had been using drugs quite a while longer? you can't just make that assumption, sir.

do i think he did use previously? of course. but if you don't have a failed tesst to prove it, good luck.
