Sophomore guard Ben Hughes, who had been working with the second-team offensive line earlier in the week, sat out of practice Saturday after straining his back while lifting weights.

Hughes said said he felt a strain when he hoisted the weight over his head, and subsequently had difficulty standing up straight.

He said he expects to spend Sunday (when the Mustangs will not practice) getting treatment and resting, and hopes to be back on the practice field Monday.

What is up with all these weight troom back injuries (Free, Gottschalk and now Hughes). Don't we teach proper form and have spotters? I know it happens, but I hope we don't start seeing a trend. If these guys are moving huge amounts of weight (as the boys in the trenches better be doing), do it in the offseason and with someone trained properly spotting you. I used to be a certified personal trainer and this should not be happening with proper form.
