WAC Football Has Fallen Apart

The Western Athletic Conference has decided to do away with football following the 2012-13 season, according to a statement released by Interim Commissioner Jeff Hurd.

"I think that sometime in late July it became apparent that it was unlikely we could continue with football," Hurd said. "We looked at every option we could think of. With the geography we have in terms of schools, it presents a challenge.

"If we can't get enough league members, we can't operate as a conference," he continued. "We're going to do everything possible to avoid that. There aren't any obvious answers out there."

Idaho is becoming an independent; Boise State is heading to the Big East; Nevada, Fresno State and Hawai'i are all set to start off in the MWC this year, with San Jose State and Utah State joining next season; Louisiana Tech and Texas San-Antonio will join Conference USA; and Texas State is departing for the Sun Belt.

Only New Mexico State has decided which route it will take beginning in 2013.

After 50 years of function, the WAC has defused and becomes the first conference to shut down since the Southwest in 1995.

And to think how close we were to getting mixed up in all that mess puts a knot in my stomach...

Yeah, going to the Big East keeps us at least a step ahead of that chaos. Still being in CUSA with no way out would have been scary.
