June First Year QB Comparison

I thought it might be interesting to compare how QB's have done in their first year under June at Hawaii and at SMU.

I'm including the first pre-June year for Robinson at Hawaii since he wasn't new to college football. I'm also including the season total of rushing yards for the team. When he had two QBs playing significant time I included the one with the most time.

Dan Robinson - 1998 - Pre-Jones Hawaii - 0-12 Record
163-354 (46.06%) - 2155 Yards - 11TD - 12 INT - 6.1Y/A - 100.66 Rat - 1067 Rushing

Dan Robinson - 1999 - Hawaii - 9-3 Record
288-556 (51.8%) - 3853 Yards - 28 TD - 18INT - 6.9 Y/A - 120.15 Rating - 1119 Rushing

Timmy Chang - 2000 - Hawaii - 3-9 Record
245-469 (52.24%) - 3041 Yards - 19 TD - 19 INT - 6.5Y/A - 111.97 Rating - 948 Rushing

Nick Rolovich - 2001 - Hawaii - 9-3 Record (Note, Rolovich got a bit of playing time the previous year, and came in this year to do 10 games vs Chang getting about 140 snaps. Did Change get injured?)
233-405 (57.53%) - 3361 yds - 34 TD - 9 INT - 8.3 Y/A - 150.5 Rating - 1100 Rushing

2002-2004 All Timmy Chang rocking 4000+ yards/season

Colt Brennan - 2005 - Hawaii - 5-7 Record
350-515 (67.96%) - 4301 yds - 35 TD - 13 INT - 8.4 Y/A - 155.49 Rating - 1100 Rushing

2006 Colt throws 5500 Yards
2007 Colt throws 4343 with a backup throwing 1200

Bo Levi Mitchell - 2008 - SMU - 1-11 Record
236-410 (57.56%) - 2865 yds - 24 TD - 23 INT - 7 Y/A - 124.36 Rating - 646 yards (I've only been estimating these and ignoring QB 'rushing' numbers, but I had to note that BM lost 140 yards rushing this year. That is not included in the 646 number)

Padron - 2009 - SMU - 8-5 Record (Padron played a little under half the attempts this year )
135-201 (67.16%) - 1922 yds - 10 TD - 4 INT - 9.6 Y/A - 159.92 Rating - 1316 Rushing

Padron - 2010 - SMU - 7-7 Record - Padron's first full year.
302-508 (59.45%) - 3828 yds - 31 TD - 14 INT - 7.5 Y/A - 137.37 Rating - 1733 Rushing

McD - 2011 - SMU - 7-5 Record
272-455 (59.78%) - 3421 yds - 17 TD - 16 INT - 7.5 Y/A - 128.23 Rating - 1582 Rushing

Analysis:

I don't know what this means, if anything. I was really expecting something to jump out. It really doesn't look like our QBs in their first year are doing too much different than at Hawaii, except for Colt Brennan. Padron's first half year of just making up offense on the fly was really on par with Brennan on the per game numbers.

One interesting thing is how many more rushing yards we are getting now, without a decrease in attempts by the QB. This means more total offense and more total snaps. I assume this is due to the number of high powered passing offenses in the conference as opposed to the WAC 10 years ago but someone else can verify that is the case. It certainly isn't due to take aways by the defense.

Even the number of TD's are better than the non-Brennan Hawaii beginning years.

I can go back and look at how many points were scored by the opposing team. I think this will be where the difference is.

It seems that we actually ARE seeing a June run 'n shoot, or at least what it looks like with a new QB, but it just doesn't SEEM like we are because there are so many more rushing plays mixed in. (I am assuming more rushing attempts, perhaps just better production. Something else to look at)

Anyone want to take a stab at what this all really means?

I would have expected JJ's r n s to look more like our performance in the Hawaii bowl.
