Measured responses to the current situation

I'd just like to give kudos to JasonB and Stallion, and several others fall under this category, for their measured responses to where we are right now. I realize that whiners will whine -- and even deserve to do so to a degree. But those two guys in particular are truly go to guys if you want to figure out our current state. Pay attention to what they say.

Again, only of you're interested in what's really going on. Otherwise, carry on.

Yep, Stallion said that we should look at the offers of the recruits and that would tell us about SMU recruiting. Looks like the chickens have come home to roost. Good call Stallion.

I think that even measured responses by the most realistic of posters indicate the following:
- We likely will not be competing for a CUSA Championship this season- June's 5th.
- There is certainly a possibility that we fail to make a bowl, even though the consensus view may still be a 6-7 win season
- Our team graduates its 5 best players at the end of this season
- Recruiting results do not appear to be coming in at a Big East level, and arguably average or worse by even CUSA standards
That is reason for concern for most. ponyboy, do the above statements sound reasonable or are they over the top in your mind?

This is what's really scary about how bad we've looked. Imagine this team next year without DJ, Reed, J'Gared, Line and Margus. Who besides Dieter and Stephon Sanders is there to be remotely excited about in the younger classes? Gottshalk maybe? We're regressing.

I think this topic is JJ damage control and the home of the overly optimistic. If we go 1-3 and 5-2 in conference, Does that remotely sound like a good season? Does that sound big easy worthy? Absolutely not. That's called being a realist and a critic. The fact is we have gone downhill on talent and this was snuffed out easy when JJ tried to bolt since he knows this is a sinking ship. Now that he knows nobody wants him even ASU hes going to collect and retire. We will need a jump starter coach and someone who can take little talent and make something out of it

June seems to have a history of undervaluing non conference games, so who knows how we will do in CUSA? And I still think a bowl is likely based on three years of history.
Last year's recruiting class seemed weak and this year's slightly less so. That's not encouraging, true, but those chickens don't come home to roost until 2014 or 2015.

Now that I've had a little time to digest, my 2012 season prediction: 7-5 and a bowl berth. If the 2013 recruiting class remains someone lukewarm like it is at the moment, what the heck do you do at that point? I don't hold the purse strings, of course, but I think you gather the resources and move on with a new coaching staff and eat the final two years of June's contract, publicly thank him for his time, and recognize him for the rebirth of SMU football.
What about 8-4, which I believe is absolute best case? I don't know.
What do we do if he picks up a few more strong recruits and goes 7-5? I don't know.
What if we keep June, Mason, maybe Phillips and stack the rest of the staff with two or three ace recruiters? What then?
I prefer to let this season play out before grabbing my burning pitchfork and joining the lynch mob.
BEAT TCU!

ponyboy, I think those are fair responses. In my mind they are probably a little optimistic, just as you might view my thoughts as slightly pessimistic.
If we end up 8-4, which I view as possibly even better than a best case scenario (we have never finished greater than 6-2 in CUSA and to say that a TCU win is likely would make me the greatest homer ever), I will be very surprised. 7-5 or less and I think June should be gone.
By the way, it has been mentioned that after this season there is no buyout for June. If that is the case, he is gone unless we win 8 in my mind.

Selectivity is a marvelous thing isn't it?
