I know high-level numbers don't say it all... and I'm sure many of you will dismiss this as fluff. However, it's at least interesting to me. Maybe some of you will too. If you find a mistake, sorry.. it happens.

Interesting. However, we need to remember that these services now give out stars to players much easier than in the past.

That's a fair assessment.
However, even with "star inflation", the overall ranking of SMU recruiting has gone up. And that's a comparison against all schools, in all conferences, which negates the impotence of more stars.

86th in average rating for 2013, and of course there's still the issue of offers (or lack thereof),

I think everyone is now looking at players with BCS offers more now. I you look at stars on either service it makes SMU look pretty good but if you look at quality offers then there is reason to be highly concerned because the offers do not look very good on all but 1 player.

"Diamond in the rough" and "under the radar" recruiting at its finest......

There is a lot of apples to oranges comparisons here. Bennet and Cavan were restricted in recruiting much more than Jones was.
Jones' classes, outside of star rating, have had a lot more BCS offers than the Bennett recruits. But then you would also have to account for academic casualties that never made it into school under Jones.
When you look at the players who didn't have BCS offers between the two coaches, Jones has a lot more players who turn out to be pretty darn good. Which implies that Jones is a better talent evaluator. But then again, there, Bennett didn't have all of the camps to evaluate talent at that Jones does.

one of jj's asu disasters- gabe marks had a good day leading all receivers with 18+ yds/catch. With all of our wr problems we sure could have used him here.

Bennet recruits Sanders, Beasley, Robinson, and last years entire offensive line turned out pretty good as well. June's highest draft choice at SMU was LeRibeus and he was a Bennet recruit. It seems that this year June has all his players on the team and they are not doing too well.
When are we going to stop comparing ourselves to teams of the past and start comparing ourselves to the BE competition that we are headed for next year. The UCF class is looking really good as far as offers are concerned.

Reb- that is the concern that many of us have. yet the sunshiners want to continue looking at jj and his team with rose colored glasses. I have stated numerous time that we are not ready to go to the BE. Our recruiting is pathetic and has been for the last couple of years. We are still struggling with depth at many positions and we should not be if we had recruited properly. I try to view our situation very objectively but it is hard not to be a little negative when we look at what we have and what we need. JMHO

The only apples to oranges comparison going on here is Jones & Bennett. Bennett was paid peanuts to richard around for six years, scream obscenities, and try and learn how to be a head coach on the fly. Jones is paid a princely sum to build a successful, sustainable, high level program where conference titles, bcs-level recruiting, and at least threatening to maybe sort of kind of knock off decent teams that people actually care about are realistic goals, if not expectations. Oh, yeah, and to play exciting football. Aint much of that going on around here after 55 games.

Amen dude this is so true. JJ looked good with someone else's players. The fact that when he talks makes people rather study and his belief that his no rivals saban to get recruitment shows why neither fans nor wins seem to happen with SMU. When the $$$ comes, slap him with his last pay check and get someone here who has study under someone with versatile playbook but more importantly someone who knows how to excite crowds, (hate to say it) a guy with an Obama voice but with actual success backing him
