I will always appreciate Jones having the reputation to be able to finally get us to where we needed from an admissions standpoint and help in getting us into a better conference. Now we need someone with some energy to recruit and use the tools we now have to get us moving up in the the football world. He does not have that desire. So, thank you June and so long.

Sorry, I do not agree....when SMU finally decided they wanted to get serious about football, they tried to get serious about football. If admissions was the only problem, then I bet we could have hired Stallion for a little bit less than 2 million a year.

Come on guys, we all knew admissions was the problem, saying hiring a deadhead from hawaii for two million a year to tell us what we already knew is just stupid.

SMU admins made the decision to get serious and change admissions. I am sure Phil Bennet, Mike Cavan, Tom Rossely all said the same things. Don"t act like June was some savior stumbling in here like he was some messiah and SMU finally saw the light.

We did it, because we wanted to start winning again, and we paid a burnout 2 million dollars. You pay two million dollars for a coach, you show you are ready to win, and will make the admission changes.

June may take credit for it...but he had very pitiful little to do with it. Every coach in the past said the same. June just happened to be the coach when the admins finally listened.

He was offered a competive admission policy from Day 1 or he would never have taken this job.

take a bow, Shadowman, you have the most insightful comment post-Tulane debacle.

To what extent the CofC demanded changes to our Model before they shelled out their $2M per year vs what changes JJ demanded before he accepted this job, I do not know, but I have to think that as is true in most things in life, it is Money that has the most influence. And whatever changes occurred to our Model after JJ's arrival here that are due to JJ, I will also give him credit for. But Shadowman, you are dead-on correct, we certainly did not need JJ to tell us WHAT changes were needed.

Having said that, this adulation for JJ, I simply don't get. He is a good, not great, coach who took marginal players recruited by PB (many more highly-regarded than JJ's) and won against inferior C-USA teams. Am I grateful for the 3 lower-tiered bowls?....sure, but JJ should be a heck of a lot more grateful for the $10M+ he has taken from us. SMU has gotten the raw end of this deal.

Other thoughts:
Perfect thread title. The cupboard is so bare right now, that it will take a good recruiting coach at a minimum 3 years to be competitive again, probably closer to 5 years.

I posted pre-JJ that I preferred Fran over him. Not that I was crazy for Fran, but I simply preferred his ability to recruit Texas + his Texas JC ties.

Realize its still early, but my first impression of AD Hart is not good.

This is the point I was making. Bennett, Caven. Rossley, et al all wanted a head coaching job. They came in under the existing guidelines and then tried to change them and were unsuccessful in getting them all changed. Every coach accomplished a little change but not where we needed to be. Jones said he would come if the changes were agreed to before he came. And yes, the credit for going afer a name coach belongs to the CoC who finally said they had enough of mediocrity and wanted to get back into the world of competitive football. But it took a coach with the reputation of Jones to get the changes agreed to.
