June's FG excuse, give me a break !!

So he claimed scared of their kicker who was 100% or something in FGs and that is why he kicked ours to make then have to score a TD. Anyone remind him we have a FG blocking specialist in Margus ?? I'll take them having to start inside the 5 and maybe making long FG over Margus to tie anyday.
Also, by us kicking a FG as bad as our special teams have played it could have been blocked and ran back for a TD as well. Plus they could have run it back for a TD after we did a kickoff even if we made our FG.
Only chance to make sure victory was to punch it in and go up 2 scores. The FG did us nothing and he knows it, just trying to come up with some BS...

I would normally have said kicking the FG is the right call, but you are right. Margus is a game changer. I like the odds of stopping a field goal better than our odds of preventing a TD, especially when they will start with better field position.

Here's the correct logic:
A. If you kick a FG, they are forced to try a TD, every set of downs is 4 down. If they get it, you LOSE. Most likely outcome is kickoff and return / start at 25. 75 to win.
B1- If you go for it, and don't get it, then they will MOST LIKELY settle for a FG, in which case you TIE. They have to go 75 yards and kick a FG. Plus, they start from the 1-2 yard line - a very iffy place to try and get a lot of yards with no timeouts.
B2 - If you go for it and get it, then you WIN.
I like B

I still like running instead of throwing the fade incompletion, thus taking 40+ seconds off the clock. The neither A nor B really matter.

Grgb and mrydel are right. It reminds me of some of PBs decisions when things were going bad. Every questionanle decision he made that had a possibility of backfiring did. Not a good sign. We pay a guy 2 mill to make more thoughtful decisions than we are getting.

I certainly understand the coaches decision; I just disagreed with it given the momentum we had going at that point in the game

No matter what decision JJ made to end the game - going for it or kicking the FG - PFs would still be going nuts today. He has become a very polarizing figure to the small die hard fan population. Even if it worked out and we won the game - we would still be second guessing or forced to defend it.
I don't know what the right answer is. SMU's core fan base is very small. We are not UT with 12,000 new Alumns each year. If 50 or 500 of those fans become disenfranchised the school doesn't care. The money still flows. If the same thing happens at SMU, the money can dry up. This is simple mathematics.
If I was the new AD or SMU SID I would take note that when something is said 7 times people will start to believe it. Just look at what has happened to the Pony Fans community. There are a lot of people saying negative things about JJ. This topic is proof. The historical voices of reason are swinging the other way. How long until it hits a donor that hurts?

clock stops at end of play on 4th and 2 - change of possession if we didn't score.

The point is moot....the Tulane kicker has been only 5 for 5 for the year over 40 yards....is that empirical evidence?.....its not like the Tulane offense has been a scoring machine. If you have the top RB in SMU's history ( maybe he will be) and you are on the 2 yard line with a tired [deleted] defensive line on a [deleted] team....bring in a FB or use a TE and run it down their throats. Finish them off as they should NOT have even been in this game. June allowed them to pump their chests....don't ever let a beaten down opponent get a break. This is football...not chess...quit thinking June, and play snot nose football and lead these men into being believers.

The pass was not on 4th down. When incomplete, the clock stopped. Had we run the ball on that play we would have either scored or an addition 40+ seconds would have run off the clock. If we had run it again on 4th down you are correct, except had we run a bootleg or sweep, it would have taken off more time than a field goal, and every second available gave them more time to score.

The pass was on first or second down. When incomplete, the clock stopped. Had we run the ball on that play we would have either scored or an addition 40+ seconds would have run off the clock. Exactly.

Man, great points. We had so much momentum and our defense was playing lights out. I really think this defense would have shut them down on the 2 (JG and Hunt bringing pressure) - it's an emotional thing (this is an emotional game).

Maybe some, but not as many as you'd think. So I disagree with you.
Go back to the game thread when the decision was made. We were all, including the commentators, saying to go for it. It was absurd. That was the most terrible play call in a game full of bad play calls and it lost us the game. We started slow in the first half and that is on the head coach, too.
