Klemm Reinebold McKnight

I think the loss of our assistant coaches Reinebold and Klemm (and even McKnight) has seriously hurt this program more than we even anticipated.
I doubt those guys could be called coaching geniuses but they sure had some passion and brought some electricity to the sidelines. They also seemed to personify a cool vibe and make it fun for the players - creating an environment I think recruits would want to be part of. Reinebold playing catch with kids before games and his the social media communications, Klemm’s recruiting ability and McKnight - what player would want that cat in their face after a special teams mistake… all of that is lacking now.
I know why McKnight is gone (understand he had same issue at Hawaii) and Klemm was lured away. Not sure about Reinebold but whatever - the energy they brought to team is gone.
Not a knock on the current staff, I like them all and from a technical perspective they’re probably an upgrade. However, it is the head coach’s responsibility to manage change by understanding and capitalizing on each current assistant’s skills and abilities and then filling in the missing pieces.
Jones has failed miserably.

at least we replaced him with a 50 year old guy who looks like he could get you a good deal on car insurance

Reinebold had been with JJ for years. His immediate departure after the ASU nonsense tells you all you need to know.

Don't know how to put this. But, your assumptions are way off track. Each of these coaches was "rescued" by Jones. In fact, June's biggest flaw might be his blind loyalty to aging coaches. In the case of Klemm he was unemployed without any direction. Each of these coaches was given the door, each for a different reason. Not one rewarded him with the same degree of loyalty.
As far as Reinebold was concerned, he had been kicked out of Canadian football, had no job and no prospects. June took him on (like Klemm at SMU) as an unpaid graduate assistant at Hawaii and put him on their health plan, no more, no less. When Jones came to SMU, Reinebold just showed up, looking for a job. He was not asked to stay with other members of Jones Hawaii staff at U of H. Jones then gave him a job. Unfortunately, Jeff had his own social problems that only got worse here--enough said and he had to go. As far as recruiting goes, very few of his recruits ever stuck, some never were admitted and others didn't last one year. Now he is back at Canadian football as a defensive coordinator, whose fans want his head as the points allowed are averaging over 40 points per game one of the highest if not the highest in the CFL.

I would personally consider Reinebold a "football genius". If you spent any time with him, you'd know what I mean. The dude was quirky to be sure, but every time I listened to him about football or the team, I learned something insightful.
All 3 guys (Klemm, Reinebold, McKnight) had issues and had to leave because of them. None of these "issues" had anything to do with June or the ASU fiasco.
In Reinebold's case, at least according to interviews I've heard on PonyFans.com with both JJ and JP, Jason Phillips was June's first choice for the job here at SMU. It's just serendipitous that Phillips became available for the job vacated by Reinebold.

Can you give us a hint as to what Caused Jeff's departure? He didn't pull any 4* recruits but he seemed to be one of the hardest workers on staff.

If what you say is true, and I have no insight one way or another, it calls into question June's judgement. If he is more loyal to washed up or underperforming coaches than to winning with the best talent available, that is a significant problem. We need a coaching staff built to perform not a jobs program. If he is too laid back to demand his coaches deliver, then he too needs to go.

Klemm, Reinbold and McKnight were certainly the most vocal and visible assistants on June's staff during his tenure here. All three on the offensive side of the staff sort of balance out June's passive coaching demeanor.
A few years ago didn't Mac Brown clear house on the offense with new assitants? A lot of programs do that when one side is underperforming. It's a little challenging here because June calls all of the plays, it's his system. Of course demanding new assistants would be one way to force JJ out.
How many of our peers next year in the Big East will have the Head Coach also call either offensive or defensive plays? How many Top 25 programs still have that coaching system in place?
Hope to see SMU find a win Thursday it will help our situation no matter the changes ahead.
