Doak was great but his team was not the best.
Why don't we honor the 1935 NC team, our best team ever?
Anyone know what these look like in color?

I think red with blue numbers and red helmet. Not sure about the pants. I think they may have a jersey in heritage hall, but am not entirely sure.

Forget it. It's too cool of an idea to get June to go for it.

From the actual 1935-36 yearbook.

Those old programs are usually generic illustrations with just the colors changed for the schools depicted, so they don't provide too much insight into the actual uniforms SMU wore back then.
I would love to see some cool throwbacks to the 1930's or 1940's.

Until the late 6o's or early 70's SMU always wore red jerseys and red helmats, their could have been one or two years in the 30's when they had a white helmats. The paints until about 1950 was a golden tan heavy duck material which a lot of schools wore it was a kind of standard. The first games I remember seeing was 1943 against a navy team.

They looked just like they do in this photo. Colored uniforms had not been invented.

Ozfan, very cool, my friend, especially the year you saw them. As for my favorite 'throwback' style, I would enjoy plain red jerseys, red (sans logo) helmuts and tan pants. Classic.

I think the red helmets did not come about until after WW II. Prior to that, I believe most teams wore a natural leather helmet. An older gentleman who attended Baylor back in those days told me that when SMU debuted the red helmet, he believed during the Walker era, that it created a stir because no one in the SWC had worn anything like it.

Weren't we the ones who introduced red shoes? Hayden Fry era.

My how things have changed. Pioneering colored helmets, shoes, black athletes, early spread offenses (30s) Even the band played pop music of the time (jazz) when nobody else dared.
Now we cling to very conservative uniforms, game presentation, advertising, band, even our offense is considered obsolete even though it is more West Coast than Run n Shoot.
Not all of that is bad, but it IS quite a change.

Well, look on the bright side, couch 'em. At least we haven't proclaimed all you outlined as tradition.
