Does this team really deserve to go to a bowl

I think it's a fair question to ask, if we really deserve to be in a bowl this year. The way this team has been so Up n Down this year, there's no way we win all 3 of our remaining games. And IF we beat S.Miss, then lose to Rice and then beat Tulsa at home, that puts us at 6-6. Or what IF we beat S. Miss, then beat Rice and lose to Tulsa, that would still put us at 6-6, but going into a bowl game after a loss. I truly believe any bowl bound team should at least have a winning record.

Just curious, did you say that last year when we played Pitt?

They were 6-6 entering the Compass Bowl.

We were 7-5 going into the Compass Bowl last year.

If this team loses to Tulane AND Southern Miss and somehow still makes a bowl, just wow.

I hate that 6-6 teams go bowling, especially since many FBS teams schedule 1 or 2 FCS teams to pad their win total. I wish FBS could not schedule games against FCS teams or at least make it an exhibition game and I also wish that rules were changed such that the bare minimum requirement to go bowling is a 6-5 record against FBS competition. As it stands, many teams go bowling at 6-6 and so you play the game by the current rules. We do not have the tradition to be able to turn down a bowl invitation!

Remember when bowl games meant something?

If we qualify according to bowl eligibility rules, we go - no question. Don't need the media saying "SMU qualified but they felt their team was too horrible to accept a bowl invitation." I wouldn't think that would be a "plus" (+).

I am not sure if we will "deserve" it, but I'd like to see the first class in decades of Fresh through Senior year players go to a bowl every year they were here at SMU. Plus it can't hurt recruiting to be able to say "we've gone to bowl games for 4 straight years". So if we qualify I think we should go.

More young men will jump on the phone, after zero offers, and beg June to let them play for him.

Beg to play where?
I am beginning to think this will be June's last year.
My sources tell me it 50/50 at best that he returns.
It's mutual.....he's had it here!
Appears to me he is miserable here.
Most coaches stay about 5-6 years anyway....so no surprise.
If we get a young gun that does well, he probably won't last as long as June did.
Get used to it....

No 6-6 teams should go to bowl games. But of course SMU should/will go - everyone does!

But can you imagine a team making a bowl after beating the following?
SFA (1AA) 4-5 FYI
UTEP (2 - 7)
Houston (4 - 5)
Memphis (1 - 8)
Southern Miss (0 - 9)
Rice (4 - 6)

11 - 35 overall record for 1A schools...wow

Some have said on other threads that a bowl game is a reward for the kids. Concerning 6-6 teams, my question is why should they be rewarded for losing half their games? Obviously it is better than 1-11, but really...a reward? Too many bowl games out there.

If we qualify and get invited to a bowl, we will go.

If they get bowl-eligible, then they deserve to go to a bowl. If they do not, then they do not deserve to go to a bowl.

lets not throw out the baby with the bowl system bathwater. extra practice, publicity, good for recruiting. if some 6-6 team is going, might as well be us.
