OT USM

I know talking about the team's game this week is off topic. What with all the news about UT's coach and firing JJ and talking smack with Turner, it’s hard to talk about this team and their opponent.

Any hoo, this is a 0-9 team with a 0-5 CUSA record with quality loses to Western Kentucky, Rice, UAB and Marshall.

They are scoring an average 19.2 points a game while allowing an average of 38.2 points.

Their 117th in passing and 53rd in rushing.

Anyway, thought I’d mention it in case someone needs a little diversion from the fire JJ, hero worship the Horns, talk to Turner, Hart, CoCs, some bum on the street….

So if they lost to those teams, how the hell did they hang in for a while at Nebraska and take UCF to overtime?

Doc, how dare you interrupt our communal flagellation to introduce a pertinent subject...

This one feels like Tulane again to me, unless we step on their necks hard, fast, early and often. I believe they could very easily bite us in the backside given our history this season, if we don't take care of the ball and business from the get-go.

My hope is that we come up quickly, and RUN the ball on them. That has always been a nice way of taking a team's fire out of them. Our O-line has slowly developed this year, and while still not great by any measure, they are better and should be able to move Southern Miss.

BTW, thanks for the reality check. On this day in particular, Mustang fan or average Joe American, perspective is in short supply.

I don't think this team is finished, yet. We can run and throw the ball. Maybe not consistently at all times but much better than the first month of the season. These players know what is on the line. Sr. want to go bowling.

This team is coming off a tough loss to a good UCF. And the memory of Tulane isn't that far off. This is another chance for us to have a winning season. Take care of business, protect the ball and create turnovers and we roll (like, oh, I don't know, Memphis).

And after we win we can rechannel all that penned up frustration on further speculation who the next coach will be after we hang JJ in effigy.

I agree. This is a team we should beat, but a team we don't really know. Tulane had its QB coming back, and nobody really knew what that was going to mean, and I don't know what to make of Southern Miss. There is no way that team has lost all of its talent. Yeah, they lost a few guys to the NFL, but they're still big and fast, and fast teams always give us fits. Let's get a lead on them and finish them off.

Zach Line needs just 60 rushing yards to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the third consecutive season.

Line is averaging 104.4 yards per game and ought to get it this Saturday. He has 194 carries in 2012 for 940 yards and six touchdowns.

People should come out to cheer Zach on.

Their starting QB got hurt 2nd half of the Nebraska game. I saw their game with Marshall, by which time they were down to their last scholarship QB (started the season 4th on the depth chart, playing scout team). They should have been a respectable team this year, but injuries have been devestating.
