2013 QB outlook

The competition has to be opened up for next year-GG has not done nearly enough this year to be implanted as the heir apparent. We have to have better play out of that position once and for all. And please JJ think about going to a more spread type of offense and dump your old scheme please.

That all sounds very logical but "We do what we do". If June is here then Gilbert will be our starting QB.

If the competition is 'closed' then I wouldn't be surprised if we lose CP and possibly even Burcham. Who wants to do all the work knowing you won't be given an equal chance to win the job.

More likely to lose CP, Burcham would still have 3 good years so hopefully he thinks that way too.

It is strange that our QB guru coach will have used a QB transfer for 3 straight years (assuming GG starts next year), and not a recruit that he handpicked to groom into a starter. Shoot, even in Hawaii, Colt Brennan was a transfer from CU.
I really thought when JJ was hired that we would lure in a 4 star or possibly 5 star qb that could grow with the staff and start for 3 or 4 years. Thought we'd have our own Case Keenum if you will. JJ had so much going for him right after the Sugar Bowl and both Chang's and Brennan's success in the Run N' Shoot.
Instead, he booted J-Will in favor of Bo Levi "Gunslinger"...had limited success with Padron before booting him for McDermott. GG falls into our lap, but no JJ recruit has had any real success at the qb position.
QB Recruits:
Bo Levi
Padron
Kaiser
CP
Burcham
Cassel
Did any of these guys have any real offers to speak of? I think CP had Colorado, Ohio and Toledo offers. Burcham had a Cincy offer.

GG has another year of eligibility?

If GG is still our QB next year then we are in big trouble once again. This has got to be upgraded somehow-it has been abysmal for far too long. I agree JJ hasn't even come close to getting the right QB to run his inane offense.

yes. the rotating qb has got to stop. this is an offense that JJ has said himself takes 2 years to pick up, 3 to really get going. why we have never had an established starter is beyond me.

I said it another thread but it bears repeating -- Gilbert has improved throughout the season and it was clear against UCF. He didn't make mental mistakes, pulled the ball down to run when there was an opportunity, and threw the ball away when needed. He wasn't perfect, but his overall performance was mostly dictated by our WRs being unable to get open downfield and our OL being unable to handle UCF's front four.
The QB competition should certainly be open next year (same as every year), but I would expect that if we see Gilbert continue to improve he's a shoe in.

Won't be as long as June is here.
Gilbert will be the QB for the rest of the time he's on the Hilltop no matter how his performance is (good or bad).

Gilbert is at best an average back up qb on this level. He simply has never shown any consistency be it here or at UT. If he hasn't gotten it yet he probably never will.

Having a new starting quarterback each year is not a formula for success. That being said, I don't know that GG is in any formula for success either.

I think he's been borderline fantastic at times the last three games and is only going to continue to get better. Why is this even a conversation?
