We need to find our place

My thinking: If we are going to 16 team conferences...
SMU is going to end up somewhere. Once conferences hit 16, they will most likely stop and expansion will cease. This is most likely the situation unless a group of school within a conference decide to split in order to promote their schools in a different way or for different opportunities...
So where will SMU land?
In a 5 conference 16 team make up, we are in... SOMEWHERE
In a 4 conference 16 team make up - we are out.
SMU better think REAL SMART right now how to land a spot. If we are outs when all is said and done, we are screwed permenantly. We can be in a bundle package for a conference that would like the Dallas market which doesnt already have it.
One lifeline? Call president Bush.
"Mr. Commissioner (name your conference), President Bush is on the line and would like to talk to you about adding SMU to the conference".

In order to be "in" we have to do better than 6 or 7 wins seasons in a weak conference.

I disagree somewhat. Yes that helps. But Maryland sure hasnt won much lately.
We need to use politics.

This is what got Maryland into the Big 10...And, I'm not talking about the multi-color uniforms.

Im not sure having the Bush library will give us any impact in the world of college football. We have an extremely weak fanbase, academics are slipping, football is mediocre at best. Basketball and other sports are our only shinning instrument. The fact is if we want to create excitement or interest. Lets show the other conferences we want to be serious, maybe get an exciting coach, get IPF ready, get in contact with media and try to talk to them about possible individual package.

It did only because Baylor was good at that time and was considered a quality opponent. I would say she was in the right place at the right time and so was Baylor football.
We are in a very bad place right now and not even a call from Bush will save us.
We need to start focusing on basketball. We will be nothing more than a flash in the pan for a season or 2 so every two decades in football. Nothing short of large scale cheating again will ever allow us consistent long term success at the rate we're going.

We need to hire a great football coach.
We need to be politicking
We need to be athletically focused.
We could use some more students.
Look into independence...
BTW - Academics are not slipping, that is absurd to say.

Sorry let me revise, rankings. If you dont believe me look where the b-school was ranked especially in comparison to AM and TCU. Now look at it. Maybe you can see what I mean by slipping (which doesnt mean crap if thats what you are thinking, just a slight negative trend).

It will a depend on what the Pac 12 does. If they raid the Big 12, there will be room for us with the leftovers from the Big 12, Big East, Conf USA, and MWC to form a legit conference. I think the Pac 12 had a chance to add OU and OSU and passed so I dont think it happens and the Pac 12 will then have to look to add schools it might have no interest in adding like Boise State and BYU. Oddly enough, if we could put together a few 10 or 11 win seasons like TCU did, we would probably be appealing to the Pac-12 because of the Dallas market and our academics.....and the HUGE assumption that had a few winning seasons.

I think Hades freezes over before Big 12 takes SMU

We cant rise far enough in the rankings in the next 2-3 years to have it make any difference in realignment, unless that Spanish Professor cures cancer.

No one in any of the big-time football circles cares or will care about schools like SMU, Rice, Tulsa, UH, etc. None of those schools bring a media market with them, or a traveling fan base, or anything of value to the table. Sure we have rich alumni--guess what--so do a bunch of other schools.
We have entered the world of the haves and the have-nots, and unfortunately, we're on the wrong side.
We had 25 years to do something and we waited too long. Too many people making decisions about this football team lived in a bubble and either couldn't see or didn't care about what was coming.
Ken Pye's dream for the SMU football program is coming true.

HAHAHA. If he cured cancer, all my anger towards him would dissipate.
