SMU's 2013 BIG EAST Opponents Set
Boise State, Miracle On Mockingbird Rematch Highlight League Slate

Dec. 11, 2012

DALLAS (SMU) - Opponents for SMU's inaugural BIG EAST season have been set, the league office announced today. Visitors to Ford Stadium in 2013 will include perennial power Boise State as well as UConn in a rematch of 1989's "Miracle On Mockingbird."

In addition to Boise State and UConn, SMU will host UCF and Temple, and will travel to Houston, Memphis, San Diego State and USF. SMU will also host Texas Tech and Baylor at Ford in 2013.

When SMU returned to the football field in 1989, critics claimed that it was going to take a miracle for Forrest Gregg and the Mustangs to win a game. SMU started the season with a 35-6 loss to Southwest Conference rival Rice, and two weeks later, the Connecticut Huskies were in town to take on the Mustangs in just their second game since the end of the 1986 season. With five minutes to play in the game, it seemed that SMU was headed for certain defeat, as the Mustangs trailed 30-14. Some SMU fans decided that the game was out of reach and started to head home, but the Mustangs scored 17 points in the final five minutes to win the game, 31-30. That first victory that many predicted might take as many as five years to achieve took just two games and was quickly dubbed the "Miracle on Mockingbird."

Not to diminish the "miracle on Mockingbird", but UCONN was a Div II team with no real football tradition or emphasis.

They were 1-AA (what is known as FCS today) which allowed them 60 scholarship players or something like that. From what I understand, that was more than the amount of scholarship players we had on our roster that year.

Now, this seems ridiculous so maybe I am misremembering it, but my recollection was that a Morning News or Times-Herald writer predicted SMU would not score a touchdown all year in 1989.

It's impossible to describe how big the Connecticut win was if you weren't on campus or following the program that year.

I was referring to the conference home games and the fact that our visitors, with the possible exception of Boise State, will bring nobody to those games

Not to overly embellish on the victory, but we were actually more like a team of high school seniors playing against a Division I-AA team.

I would be interested to see Boise and UConn. Obviously TTU and BU will be good games. Not a bad schedule all in all. And I might be able to make the Memphis game which is always a bonus when I can make an Away game.

I assume Boise is off the schedule now, since they will not be joining the BE.

SMU had 45 scholarship players including 15 redshirt freshmen and 30 freshman plus about 2-3 upperclassmen. UCONN I think had 65
