Look back at 2009 Hawaii Bowl

This afternoon I decided to re-watch the 2009 Hawaii Bowl. This game is by far the peak of JJ's career at SMU. We had a Freshman QB who threw for 460 yards, a very good traveling fan base that made it to the game and we destroyed a respectable opponent 44-3. The future of SMU football was looking extremely promising on that day...

Three of the receivers on the field that day are playing in the NFL (Sanders, Robinson and Beasley). The Freshman QB, depending on his game today against Sam Houston State, could be playing for a National Championship...

There are still familiar faces from that game who are still currently playing such as Margus, JG and Zach.

My point by typing all of this up is I don't understand how we got to this mediocre point when on December 24, 2009, SMU football showed so much promise...

It saddens me because I thought we would be at a much better place in CFB right now...

Mediocre coaching and mediocre recruiting got us to this point and soon we'll back in the gutter staring up at schools like Denton High and UTSA.

Still remember watching this one with my brothers and enjoying it so much. We had such high hopes after that one.

Great fan base? Don't remember seeing that. Maybe cardboard cut outs or something lol

Well, those 3 NFL receivers you mentioned, were all recruited by Phill Bennett.

We had a pretty strong OL too, all recruited by Phil Bennett.

Can't hear Colin kaepernick's name without thinking of that game. Who would have thunk he would end up an NFL starting QB; not cause he wasn't good but because he just seemed to be more of a running QB.

Thought Cole was a JJ recruit......

Cole originally committed to Bennett, June decided to keep him on after taking the job.

Here's the important part. JJ made them into NFL'ers. Otherwise, they'd never have sniffed the NFL.

And Beasley decided to remain committed. Two parts to the Mutual Admiration Society, or whatever you want to call it. It's hard to root for a Cowboy, but he became a hell of a receiver for us. Thanks for everything, Cole, and continued success.

What a great game that (2009 Hawaii Bowl) was!

You get it :!:

June's a team building coach, with connections to the NFL :!: Watched 4 NFL Mustangs play at
Cowboy Stadium yesterday. There wasn't but 0, 1 or 2 Mustangs playing in the whole NFL, and
even then on practice teams when Jones took over.

You keep sending players to the NFL, and then you don't have to recruit. You chose from the
resumes sent to you :!:

We wish it was that simple, but to be fair we should recognize that JJ has developed players better than any of our post death penalty coaches...and he has connections and respect from NFL people that gets our guys looks.
