On Halloween 1934, Peruna I escaped from his on-campus living quarters and was struck and killed by an automobile on Mockingbird Lane. The event devastated the SMU community and sent the university into mourning.
A week before Peruna I’s death, he traveled to New York for the Fordham game where a city cab was his mode of travel. It was there at Fordham where Peruna kicked and killed Fordham's ram mascot.

I prefer the true Harvard crimson and Yale blue. The reds and blues we have worn for the last 50 years are hideous as they are exactly the same shades of red and blue used by virtually every other college in the country. Part of branding is to have truly identifiable colors, uniform design and helmit logo. We have the logo and on a given day you cannot tell our uniforms from Nebraska, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Arkansas, NC State....etc.

Pony Express blue, and nothing else.

School color are Harvard crimson and Yale blue. That is would it should be and nothing else.

I like Peruna, too. A lot. But two questions:

1. Is there any documentation of Peruna killing the Fordham Ram? Newspaper clippings, eyewitness accounts, etc.? Or was this more of an SMU "legend" such as the Lee Iacocca lockerroom speech pledging to name the new sports car the "Mustang"?

2. If Peruna did kill the Fordham Ram, was it really a ram or a goat? I gotta think a ram would have a pretty thick skull, with all the head-butting rams do to establish dominance and impress the females. I know goats can be pretty hard-headed, too. Any chance Peruna merely stunned the alleged ram?

3. Why has the story of the original Peruna getting run over been promoted over the years? Is that really an image we want to promote? We let our own mascot - the original Peruna - get loose and get killed. Doesn't really reflect well on Peruna or us. Seems like something you might want to leave out of a media guide, rather than reprint it year after year.

I always heard about Peruna riding in a cab in NYC and staying in a hotel (Waldorf???). Peruna is bad [deleted] and I am proud he is our mascot!

I heard the story about Peruna getting hit by a car was because he was being

stolen by some aggies and he got away from them and was hit on Mockingbird.
