They lost to Iowa St during the season. Don't know if SMU would beat Iowa State.

SMU would lose to Iowa State because ISU has a winning record. As has been shown by the bowl season, CUSA is one of the weakest conferences in recent memory.

What bowl season would that be?
SMU crushed Fresno State by 33
Rice beat Air Force by 19
Tulsa beat Iowa State by 14
UCF beat Ball State 21
East Carolina lost to ULaLa by 9
CUSA was weak during the regular season, but bowl season has proved anything but that. CUSA finished the bowl season 4-1 and will likely take the Bowl Challenge Cup again this season. Iowa State finished the season 6-7 so they have a losing record.

This is yet another example of why (without poo-pooing the PF delight in declaring gloom and doom all season long) the only time you can really judge a season is when it is over. You can assess a body of work and the quality of the teams we played over the course of a season.
Still can't really justify the loss to Tulane, though.

Here's how I justify it. It was one game. It's very rare that a team doesn't lose at least one game it shouldn't have.
Pretty good season by the Mustangs. I'm now ready to get to that next level.
