I know this bball, but still very bad news for us and the Big East. Per the last sentence of the story, this TV deal might allow them to leave at the end of this year....

Networks show interest in DePaul, others leaving Big East

Television networks already are jockeying for position to negotiate with the seven Catholic non-football playing universities exiting the Big East, but the parameters of those negotiations will involve more than dollars.

The seven schools, including DePaul, are interested as much in establishing coast-to-coast exposure that can advertise "the brand" of the new league, since the revenue package offered by any network is expected to be substantial.

Lost interest at "DePaul." They haven't done sh*t since Reagan's first term.

From Omaha Paper:

"The Catholic basketball league is still in the formative stages, but ESPN.com's Darren Rovell reported an idea being floated that could raise some eyebrows. According to Rovell, a revenue-sharing formula is being discussed in which the seven former Big East schools would make twice as much as the new schools joining (according to ESPN, it could be up to $5 million annually per school). The thought being, the schools like Creighton or Butler or Dayton would be happy because they would still be making more than in their current leagues. That mentality worked so well in the Big 12."

Unbalanced revenue is emerging as a divisive issue. Reference Longhorn Network, Boise State/MWC and, now, the Catholics BB 7.

Now it is about access to money. Taking a reduced share better than no share. Can it now be more clear TV runs college revenue sports. Sad state of affairs.

In today's Chicago Sun Times, "Big East exit strategy gets touchy"

Question: Why not offer the Catholics a deal, e.g. semi-automonous Divisional status which would tie them to the Big East by having each of their BB (perhaps other sports too) team's committing to play at least 4 BE games per year? Perhaps the winner of each "division" gets to Madison Square Garden at the end of the year? In return, the Catholics get an earlier departure and reduced Exit Fees.
