I don't see anything wrong with it, although no chance the TX legislature passes it. The Whorns will lobby it down. As the article states, legislatures getting involved in college football rivalries is nothing new

I would think they would have better things to do than worry about a football game.

It's not without precedent. Years ago the NM legislature enacted a bill requiring UNM and NMSU to play one regular season hoops game a year vs one of the states d2 schools. Subsequent legislation modified it to allow the game to be only an exhibition after RPIs took a hit.

Just because it's been done before doesn't mean it isn't stupid.

Yes and No.

On the one hand, you are correct. Politicians have to look out for what is best for the state.

On the other hand, it could be argued that having the game is "best" for the state. Even if the egos involved won't admit it, the game is good for the schools and good for the taxpayers.
1) Both schools benefit in terms of prestige from the rivalry;
2) Both schools benefit financially from playing the game;
3) When the games are played, there is a huge influx of money into the local restaurants, hotels, rental car companies, etc.

It took a bill to get Auburn and Alabama to play each other way back, like in the 1920's or 30's or so.

I think it's good for the state to play the game, but of course what it really is is political grandstanding by an Aggie alum to try and make Texas look bad. Not that I'm complaining. But like I said, very little chance it goes anywhere legislatively.

Everyone says they have a lot better things to do- come on, that's an easy cop out. It takes about 15 minutes out of a 4 month legislative session to vote on something like this. Won't they vote on a bunch of stupid honorary resolutions too?

A&M took their bat and ball and actually went to a better conference. No longer always in UT's shadow.

If the bill gets to Gov Perry I hope he veto's it.
