SMU Announces Football Staff Changes

Feb. 28, 2013

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU assistant football coaches Joe Haering and Bob Palcic will not return for the 2013 season, Head Coach June Jones announced today. Haering's contract expires in June, at which time he will pursue other opportunities, while Palcic recently announced his retirement.

"I want to thank Joe and Bob for all their work for our program," said Jones. "They were both valuable members of our staff and we wish them the best."

Haering completed his fourth year on the Mustang football staff and helped SMU reach a school-record four straight bowl games during his tenure. A life-long coach and scout, Haering arrived on the Hilltop in 2009 after spending 12 seasons as a college scout with the Buffalo Bills. The Bucknell alumnus received a commission in the United States Army after graduation and served as a first lieutenant and company commander in Vietnam. He was inducted into the Western Chapter Of The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in the spring of 2010.

Palcic just completed his first season on the Hilltop, joining the SMU staff in March 2012. He developed an all-new offensive line in 2012 after the Mustangs graduated all five starters in 2011, and still helped SMU reach the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, where they routed Fresno State, 43-10. Palcic, who coached three Outland Trophy winners in his career, spent 40-plus as a coach, serving as an NCAA, NFL and CFL assistant, winning Rose Bowl and Grey Cup Championships along the way, among others.

SMU opens Spring Practice on March 25.

Just have to wait and see who they replace them with. I am sure it was a tough decision that had to be made in order for SMU to progress.

Good luck to both, and thanks for your time at SMU. Enjoy the next stage of your lives with your families.

Should we go after someone who has college experience, or maybe grab a HS coach who could funnel players?

I would think the DeSoto HS coach would at least get an interview.

Claude Mathis has been a college Rb coach at Texas St. I've been suggesting him for awhile. Of course he turned down the UH RB coaching job last year 3 days after accepting it but it might have been a Metroplex thing. Only problem is that if Mumme is hired we don't have a space for him. Gonna need a LB coach unless june gets 6 to coach offense and Mason gets 3. I also noticed schools like UT have mentioned Mathis as a potential college assistant so his star is rising. If it was up to me he would be the first one i'd offer over Mumme and i'd comE with a major league salary like the BB boys were smart enough to do.

Houston Nutt is wanting back in coaching and he is a hell of a recruiter. He might come on for a year or 2.

How critical is a LBs coach? Coach Mason works closely with the linebackers, anyway, so if he's willing to continue that, couldn't the other coach be some sort of floating defensive assistant?

Does anyone know how much Mathis actually coaches? Or is he one of those head coaches who oversees everything? That's not a bad way to do things, but if Suan moves to OL and he takes over as RBs coach, he needs to be a good teacher, too. We have a newcomer and a bunch of really young guys at RB.

I'm surprised JJ didn't go after Nick Rolovich (Nevada's OC) who he coached at Hawaii. Rolo has some Run & Shoot and pistol coaching experience last the few years.

40 years too young.
