ATLANTA – Negotiations between the Big East and the breakaway Catholic 7 are ongoing, commissioner Mike Aresco said Friday after a meeting of presidents and athletic directors at a hotel near the Atlanta airport.

"We had some good conversations; didn't reach any conclusions and our negotiations with the other group on continuing. That's it," Aresco said.

Catholic 7 could be catalyst of another chain reaction

"While college athletics has generally been operating in a state of flux the last three years due to massive realignment, life in the Missouri Valley and Atlantic 10 conferences has been pretty good. To this point, the venerable Valley has been untouched, with no membership changes since Tulsa left in 1996. Less than a year ago, the A-10 seemed poised to be one of realignment's big winners with the addition of Butler and Virginia Commonwealth."

Pitino: Catholic 7 'deserves' Big East name

And, who asked his opinion, Mr. New ACC Guy?

As long as there is some compensation (that at the very least UConn is due), I agree that the catholic 7 "deserve" the Big East name. After all, the BE was initially formed as a BB conference and that group will have the largest remaining group of long time members.

I always thought inviting TCU and then SMU, Houston & Boise made that Big East name a bit of a joke. Of course, I think the same holds true with the Big 10 and Big XII with their current membership.

I say let's move on, but as for the new name of our new league....I sure wish the Metro Conference had not already been used

No way. The casual fan will still recognize the big east name. That gives the schools under the moniker slightly more credibility even if it is undeserved. If the catholic seven want that good will associated with it, don't leave the conference. The name is valuable and should only be given up if significantly more is paid by the catholic seven than just the exit fees they are owed.

Initial reports sound like the price tag was not very high. If that is the case, then Aresco is just another in a long line of terrible commissioners for the Big East.

Perhaps with all the Exit Fees and Brand Name Selling, he is building a War Chest or creating new Cap Space.
