This is big for the ACC. All that 'The ACC is dead' talk can be put on hold. Not that it's over, but they just got the target the Big 10 has coveted for half a century.

But the question now is if and when ND joins in Football, and who comes with if so? UConn? Does the ACC steal WV from the Big 12? Cincy has to be a possibility if Louisivlle is in.

ND to ACC in Basketball means zilch-that was already known-just the timing was unknown. ND to the ACC hasn't stopped the other ACC schools looking elsewhere-in fact it has accelerated since the ND announced it was going to ACC

ND basketball did not save the BE why would it save the ACC?

Interesting that the 'America 12' name appears to have been rejected by the Presidents. I'm sure that the pro-'America 12' folks will claim that Turner drove the decision/vote.

Notre Dame basketball to the ACC does absolutely nothing to solidify the ACC from realignment.

UVA, GT, and UNC are all in active negotations with the Big 10. Once the Maryland lawsuit is settled, then they're likely gone.

VT and NC State will then be poached by the SEC getting them to the number they want.

FSU, Clemson, and maybe Miami as well will then go to the Big 12.

At that point the ACC will need a minimum of five schools in order to keep the conference alive.

And those 5 schools would likely be Uconn, Cincy, USF, Temple and Memphis.

who knows, but weren't we (and Houston) invited to the Big East before Memphis and Temple were? and if anything we would be better fits in a more southern oriented ACC than the the former Big East when we got invited. Nevertheless, bet on Perunas Law taking effect in any situation.

LOL, Notre Dame to ACC was announced last fall, they just hadn't set a date to finalize the move yet. Setting the date does nothing whatsoever to solidify the ACC

Taking Memphis and Temple over SMU and Houston is beyond stupid.

They will take 7 including SMU and Houston.

Maybe we can pay them to let them join our conference.

I agree that BB does nothing for the ACC, and that the ACC isn't out of hot water yet. No arguments there.

Maybe I give ND too much credit, but have to believe that they aren't going to join a conference, with their options available, that they think is goign to crumble overnight.

That, and if there is any way they join in football that is a game changer.

I just don't see the ACC going quietly into the good night, especially considering how screwed up the Big XII has become.

The ACC will have to find itself at that point. I'm not entirely sure what the ACC would do. Who would be left, Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse, BC, Wake, Duke, ND (all sports only)? Basically, the BE with two ACC holdovers. The question would be whether the ACC would focus on hoops or on football or on academics or on Geography? Syracuse, ND, BC, Wake and Duke will be the shot callers. If they focus on all three issues SMU wins. If they focus on football, UH, USF and SMU win. If they focus on basketball we lose to UConn, Cincy, and Memphis. If they focus on geography, then South Florida would replace losses in Florida and perhaps UConn to travel with Syracuse and BC. But then Cincy, Memphis, SMU and UH become outliers. The ACC needs to make a bold football move to save itself. The problem is that there are not many dance partners out there willing to dance. They flipped the bird at WVU who would fit nicely now. They should have jumped on KU when Missou went to the SEC. At this point the question is who is going to eat whom? Will the ACC be filleted or the Big XII be filleted? If the ACC wanted to be bold, they'd offer WVU, KU, KState, and ISU. That would leave Texas, TT, OU, OSU heading out west and Baylor and TCU free agents. That would make a great hoops conference and an improved football conference. But they'd have 18 schools for hoops. This of course would be the worst option for us except that we'd end up united with Baylor and TCU again in the BE. Again, we're just chairs on the deck when something happen.

The ACC lost a major battle when the Big 12 signed away its TV rights for a decade. No other conference including the ACC has had the stability to do that. It has been a showdown between those 2 conferences for survival for 3 years. Everybody but apparently SMU fans knew the Big East would splinter. To survive the ACC schools will either have to be satisfied with being secondary conference or somehow convince ESPN (right?) to give them competitive TV rights to keep more product off ESPN's competitors. ESPN just might do that otherwise, it could have a lot of TV programming to fill. But you can't really have an intelligent conversation about this until you understand the effect of the Big 12 schools assigning away their TV rights for a decade. The ACC only increased its Buy-out fee-which did not bar the doors.

The ACC is toast as a big boy conference. Its only a matter of time and no, ESPN will not be there to bail them out this time. They stand to lose AT LEAST the following schools:

UVA
UNC
GT
VT
NC State
Clemson
FSU

Could potentially lose in addition to the above:

Miami
Duke
Louisville
Boston College


Depending on the severity of the defections, SMU and Houston stand an excellent chance of being invited to what is left of the ACC. That conference would still be a dramatic upgrade over where we have been since the SWC.
