Question RE: Mustang Band Hall

Looking at the construction update on the SMU website and I see that construction either is underway or should soon be underway on the new Mustang Band Hall. I wasn't aware that the project was that far along. With all the construction going on right now though its hard to know what is going on. Anyone have any insight into this?

Here is the link to the construction update:

Also a brief description of the construction of the Mustang Band Hall:

Mustang Band Hall

Demolition and construction of the Mustang Band Hall will begin in February 2013. This project is scheduled to be substantially complete in August 2013. The Mustang Band Hall will replace the existing band hall, which is currently located in the lower level of the Perkins Natatorium. The new Mustang Band Hall will be constructed in the unfinished south basement area of the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. In addition to finishing-out this existing basement area, the building will be expanded, creating a separate dedicated entrance for the Mustang Band Hall as well as a new plaza for outdoor events on the south side of the building. The Mustang Band Hall will feature a main rehearsal room, a percussion rehearsal room, three smaller breakout rehearsal rooms, offices, an archive library, as well as other spaces. A special feature of the Mustang Band Hall will be the Hall of Honor, which will feature the relocated historic band hall entrance doors and band hall memorabilia. The new Mustang Band Hall will create a better organized and much larger home in which our Mustang Band may grow.

I saw this too, and now I note that it is off the construction update. Frustrating. Of course, the Moody rennovations are also not on the construction page... so... hmm. I don't think it is all that difficult to maintain an accurate construction update page, but then what do I know?

If they ever got everybody on the same page, SMU could be dangerous (in a good way).

And that is part of what is so frustrating. It's not a huge school. It seems like it would be manageable to organize us and pull it together. But we never seem to be able to.

Nothing more true has ever been said about SMU.

Wasn't the whole point of dissolving the Board of Governers and filling the Board of Trustees with generic people with no real interest in SMU specifically to prevent the school from all getting in the same page with athletics anyway?

More than 30% are assigned by the Methodist Church (not including the ex officio members). Then the rest are recomended by the board which probably results in over 50% having no specific interest in SMU other than having been made trustees. Just a guess on my part on the 50% number.

"The Board of Trustees is composed of 42 members, including 3 bishops and 9 other trustees recommended by the South Central Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church; 26 trustees recommended by the Board; and 4 ex officio members (the President of the University and one representative each of the Students' Association, the Faculty Senate, and the Alumni Board)."

The university is holding off construction of the band hall until there's a major donor. Does anyone want to step up? It'll be named after you.

Nah, band people were always uptight and annoying when I was in undergrad.

So they scheduled to start in February and then unscheduled it to wait for a main donor? This is garbage. I guess the funding for the band hall was in the last $35 million since we have already raised $715 of the $750.

I heard a joke once:

I don't care if it's called the TCU Horned Frogs SMU Mustang Band Hall, as long as it gets paid for.

My child was a student athlete at SMU recently and our excitement 4 years ago of receiving a full scholarship and the great reputation of Dallas and SMU has been tempered with the negatives of so little information from the coaches and athletic department and fan support, especially at the football games. And it almost seems they WANT to have the reputation as a university that looks down on the rest of Dallas and North Texas and the only people that need to be informed are the rich and powerful. What a waste....they should embrace Dallas and welcome support instead of making it fashionable NOT to attend the games.

That seriously causes you to temper your perspective of smu? Yikes
