Commissioner Mike Aresco called East Carolina ''a valuable addition'' in a statement announcing the move Wednesday.

''Conference realignment has been an arduous journey through uncharted waters for our Pirate Ship but, with the Pirate Nation on board, we knew we would get there sooner or later,'' Holland said Wednesday in an email. ''We now join an excellent group of institutions who relish the challenge of rebuilding the conference's status in the new world order created by realignment.''

I know the commissioner is trying to do the best he can to keep the conference up there, but somehow it doesn't thrill me too much to know that we're now in the same conference as, get this, East Carolina!

I suspect there are new conference mates that might say the same thing about SMU.

Which is why it'll be a miracle if it lasts more than one season with all its present members. This thing is held together with shoestring and gum.

Nobody has asked the important question yet: with ECU joining does the new conference get an automatic bid to their virtual bowl?
