It's got to be more to do with New Orleans, establishing a stronger southwest presence (SMU, Houston and Tulsa too) than an endorsement of Tulane athletics. Personally I like it. It means more road games we can actually attend, great city and Tulane has had some success in the past.

The basketball schools had the majority of votes and wanted an excuse to leave the conference. Tulane provided that for them.

Obviously, the Catholic 7 didn't like it, which is why they broke away from the conference.

This seriously seems like the best explanation. Ridiculous.

Our president has gone on record that he was seeking a conference with better academics than the Mountain West. He serves(ed) on the knight Commission with Tulane's president for several years. We invited their football team to stay in our dorms and practice on our field after Katrina, dispite a number of campuses much closer to New Orleans, including LSU. But, other than that we have no special relationship.

You used to claim that SMU's President was the only President in the Big East that had a personal relationship with Tulane. Why did you back off that? Anything to do with the article in Orlando that published texts from the UCF President to Aresco in which the UCF President said the Tulane President was a personal friend? Oh, and by the way, the UCF President actually attended and worked at Tulane too?

Tulane's football team didn't go to SMU. They went to Louisiana Tech.

Well, he said we invited them, not that they actually did come here.

I thought that the Tulane team was on SMU's campus temporarily. Then moved to la tech. I remember all five of the smu fans at the time laughed when Tulane beat the team that hosted them, which, of course, us smu.

LOL, neither SMU nor UCF had a vote at the time. Even if we did help Tulane get in (SMU didn't - UCF apparently did), the basketball schools were still the ones with the power to turn it back. They voted Tulane in because they were looking for an excuse to get out for several years, and they finally had the power to make the conference do something that would give them that excuse.
The Tulane addition would not have happened if not for the basketball schools looking for a way out. Period. End of discussion.

Didn't we share our recruiting lists with them as well?

Tulane stayed on our campus for several weeks after Katrina. I had players sit in on my classes.

Some teams did end up at Smu ( golf?).

Tulane's football team sat in the stands and watched our home game against Baylor that year. Then Tulane returned later that season and kicked our butt, too.
