"What if this fiasco could actually change something? What if the mess in the athletic department at Rutgers could trigger a cultural shift, or at least hit the pause button, on the consuming madness of college sports?"

Apparently the school president did not go a very good job in checking backgrounds before hiring.

Verbal abuse has been prevalent in some sports, especially men's football, baseball and basketball, for years. A side note to Title IX just means women have an equal opportunity to be abused. Seems like there should be some sort of whistle-blower act to stop this behavior. Maybe guarantee the full scholarship for 4-5 years for players who turn in the offenders. Luckily for SMU nothing came to light publicly with the Dieter transfer and the coach leaving for the west coast last year

And the answer is... (envelope please...) No.

Are you kidding? RUTGERS (a fine school, but not exactly an athletic superstar) fails to background check and has the misfortune of being near the New York market which only cares about Rutgers when somebody messes up, like, say not doing employee background checks will not hit a pause button on anything, except maybe to hit the laugh track. You have a major power program one state over that hid the raping of minors on campus facilities and didn't hit the "full stop" button or even really experience a speed bump, a few failed background checks at a backwater isn't going to do anything.
