Watching an effective pass game orchestrated by Gilbert used with a healthy dose of Mr. Shead and Line to beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders/Necks and celebrating with an icy cold Peruna Power Pilsner in Ford stadium while singing Varsity under the Texas sky!

I must admit, this sounds fun.

And Texas Football magazine is only days away from the shelves...

That does sound like a blast.

S...M...U and I may be coming from Denver and Atlanta, respectively, to the game.

I know that this is a bit sun-shiney, but looking at some of the pre-season magazines, we should have a realistic shot at this one. They are breaking in a first time new coach, new QB and we catch them at home.

There defense was very vanilla last year, and got torched the second half of the year. They lose practically everybody from their secondary but return almost everybody from a so-so front seven - so hopefully the line can hold up and GG can be on target like he was late last season. If so, we could score some serious points. Damn, we need a breakaway threat at WR.

On offense, they're starting a Sophomore QB who threw 48 passes last year and the line is going to be young and thin. But they return a running back who averaged 5 ypc and have a 1,000 yard receiver, and you know they are going to throw the ball. So we could match up well here: Our weak DL against their (relatively) weak OL, our solid LB's against a solid RB, the hoped-for strength of our DB's against their talented receivers - there are 6 former 4-star recruits in the recieving core alone. Again, it may just come down to whose QB is more accurate.

Good first game. Should be worth the price of admission.

I don't bet, but if I did, I'd bet on Tech because they have more depth at several positions. But with a new coaching staff in Lubbock and some of the talent we have, I think we have a real shot to beat the Red Raiders. Can ... not ... wait ... for ... August.

Take a look at SMU's history in first games of the season since 1989.......or even since JJ got here.

I am as optimistic as anyone but I have watched Jones' pattern of using the out of conference games as prelims like the exhibition games in the pros. He does not hit in the summer and the kids are not ready for full speed tackle football. Add in the large disparity in athletes and I do not think the new coach and new system will come into play. Plus that coach's system got into place pretty quickly at A&M.

So put me in the "there ain't no way in hell" category and let me please be proven wrong.

I don't think I would say no way in hell....

- A&M struggled offensively the first game of the season (granted, against Florida), and really heavily relied on Manziel the first several games of the year, even against SMU if you remember.
- The TT QB and A&M QB are not comparable.
- The talent level of the TT team and A&M team are not comparable. TT does not have first rounders at each tackle. A&M underperformed for years and came of age last year.
- Against Baylor last year, Hunt getting injured on the first series, no depth in the secondary, Parks playing hurt because of injuries, a tipped pass that turned a TD into an INT, a crappy OL that had our QB on a two second count so that he wouldn't get killed, and the DJ knockout "fumble" for a TD are what lost us the game. Not a lack of hitting in practice. That is just an excuse we keep throwing out there because the team just doesn't play well. If we had those same things happen against Baylor at any other point in the season, the same crap would have happened.

Our offense is going to be significantly better this season. And that will keep us in a lot of games.

Just saw Zelt Minor is listed on the SMU roster at 6'3" 275...can't wait to see him and hope to see him playing early and making plays in the Tech game on Aug. 30.
