40 observations about this college football season.

Quite a few SMU mentions, not necessarily lauding our team, but hey I'll take being put in the national conversation....

Any press is good press and this trend:

"34. Speaking of SMU, this is the fourth straight year the Mustangs will open with a Big 12 opponent - this time, Texas Tech. They lost the previous three by an average margin of 22.7 points. But the Red Raiders are the first to come to Dallas."

will stop on Aug. 30 when we defeat TT.

Let's hope so, we nearly had them last time.

I distinctly remember how quiet their stadium got when we got within a touchdown at the end of the game.....

Texas Tech has to replace many of its starters from last year's team, including the QB. They have a new coaching staff and are trying to install a new offense and defense. They've lost quite a bit of talent due to transferring out / grades / injuries. And the talent they have is the result of Tuberville's - I don't give a crap recruiting classes of the last three years.

I know that SMU has its own issues with replacing talent, but this is your chance to beat a big 12 team at home again. This Frog fan will be rooting for you.

But they've got the offense mastermind, swaggiest of the swag, Kliff.

The guy is going to bring in some big time recruits.

Usually when the coach leaves, it was time to leave. I remember Tuberville signed a ton of JUCOs a few years ago, I wonder if they are all gone THIS year...

We've got some restocking to do as well so it should be a very interesting game. Glad this is in our house.

The Tech QB, Michael Brewer, could be the real deal especially learning from Kingsbury.

Thats my real prediction. They are miles beyond us in talent. We made it a game last time while they were in chaos over coaching AND personnel change. We did well on errors and bliwn plays by them as a result of this. Meanwhile we are in our own state of flux losing several really key guys like Line, and game changing field goal preventer Margus.

I don't understand why you feel the need to be unrealistic on a discussion board. What do you get out of blindly saying we will win every game on here? Doesn't it get boring?

If we are ever going to beat them, it has to be this season.

I wish I could be optimistic about the Tech game but given how poorly we have played in the first game of the JJ era, I just don't have much hope. I thought we would compete with Baylot but we got blown out.

JJ runs pro practices where contact is limited but he doesn't have a pre season to get the team re acclimated to contact. I understand his reasoning - lack of depth means he must avoid silly practice injuries.

The result is slow starts when playing talented teams who DO have the depth to have contact practice as they have talented back ups.

Guys, the talent disparity is too great and unfortunately growing between SMU and the bottom half of the Big 12. And we don't have the on field coaching to close the gap.

Sad but true. Baylor, TT, TCU,ISU have blown by us. Kansas would be interesting.

JJ will move on and hopefully we can find a coach who can recruit in talent that gets us back in the mix.

In the meantime, our OOC schedule is a preseason for the conference schedule and a chance for a payday.
