Daniels, Barocio-Leon Named Assistant Football Coaches

June 27, 2013

DALLAS (SMU) - Eric Daniels (Linebackers) and Carlos Barocio-Leon (Special Teams) have both been promoted to Assistant Coach, Head Coach June Jones announced today. Daniels, who spent the 2012 season as SMU's Coordinator of Quality Control (Defense), is entering his fourth season on the Hilltop. Barocio-Leon spent the 2012 season as Coordinator of Quality Control (Offense) and previously served as offensive graduate assistant and video graduate assistant, working with the SMU football program since 2008.

"Eric and Carlos are bright young coaches who have really proven themselves here on the Hilltop," said Jones. "They have helped us over the last few seasons and I'm sure that their impact will only increase now. We're glad to have them on staff."

Daniels began his coaching career at Hardin-Simmons University as the inside linebackers coach in 2007. He then moved to Angelo State University in 2008 to coach inside and outside linebackers in a 3-4 scheme. Daniels coached four All-Conference linebackers and set a Lonestar Conference record by having three different linebackers receive Conference Defensive Player of the Week in the 2009 season. He spent the 2011 season as a member of the SMU strength & conditioning staff and the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant with the SMU defense.

Daniels is originally from Rockwall, Texas, and began his playing career as a linebacker at Baylor before finishing his career at Hardin-Simmons, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in physical education. While coaching at Angelo State, he earned his Master's degree in student development and leadership in higher education.

Barocio-Leon came to SMU from Texas College, where he served as the Offensive Coordinator and quarterbacks coach, helping the Steers claim the CSFL Championship in 2005. He played college football for New Mexico State and then played professionally in Italy for one year with the Bergamo Lions.

After his playing days, Barocio-Leon turned to coaching and became the Offensive Coordinator at the University of Nuevo León in Monterrey, México. After two seasons, he returned to Europe and served stints as the Head Coach of the Badalona Dracs, winning two National Spanish titles and one Spain's Cup, and the Bergamo Lions, winning two Italian National Championships and two Eurobowl Titles (XIV & XV). He also served as Head Coach for the Tyrolean Raiders in Innsbruck, Austria, and, in eight years of professional head coaching experience in the European Leagues, compiled an overall record of 74-16.

Barocio-Leon has a B.A. and an M.B.A. from New Mexico State. He is fluent in Spanish and Italian and near-fluent in French and German.

What does Quality Control do in this sense?

He ranks the quality of calling a 40 yard bomb on 3rd and 2 which we seem to do with great regularity.

Will Barocio-Leon's recruiting responsibility include Europe?

With his Spanish speaking background it would seem that he would be very effective in San Antonio and those surrounding areas.

SMU Basketball hires 3 guys with recruiting resumes. SMU FB hires guys with no recruiting resumes. Wonder which one will be more successful. At least June ran out of former NFL retirees looking to supplement pension

June is obviously loyal to his people. This hire shows that. I fully understand that many people, I'm many ways myself included, would rather he bring in the best recruiters out there. I still respect his loyalty and understand more why June is so highly regarded as a person.

It's incredible that people are writing off this hire already. As good as PP's interview is, it's impossible for any of us to know his teaching style or his recruiting style (although apparently he already sealed the deal with Epley). For years, people have been screaming for June to hire someone young, Texan, energetic and eager to recruit. Daniels appears to be all of those things, but people still want to complain for the sake of complaining and badmouthing JJ. From my standpoint, this looks like a great hire. He's not going to be asked to reinvent the wheel. We all seem to like Tom Mason as our DC, and this guy has worked under him, knows his system and knows what he wants. If Mason thinks enough of him to OK adding him as an assistant, then it's hard to find fault with the hire. Good luck, Coach Daniels!

You said people (plural) are complaining. The only concern presented was by Stallion. I think you are overreacting. Calm down dude, everyone else is fine with the hire. I noticed you did not say anything about Coach Barocio-Leon. So I can't wait to see the interview with Coach Barocio-Leon to hear his views on recruiting. Should be fun.

Maybe you're right and I overreacted. Sorry. Apologies to Stallion if I misread his level of disapproval. The more times I watch PP's interview with Daniels, the more excited I am.

I didn't mention Coach Barocio-Leon because I don't know much about him, other than what was in the press release. I'm looking forward to seeing what he tells PP, too.

I liked the Daniels interview and expect good things from him. My question was in good humor about the other coach. But if he could snag another Margus or two every year, a fortnight tour of Europe each Summer might be worth it.

Welcome to both.

Now Stallion, aren't you one of the ones who cried loudest when Klemm was shown the door? Klemm, like Coaches Daniels and Barocio-Leon, was also a GA who paid his dues and got promoted. No difference.

You wanted young, energetic guys with Texas ties? Now you have three (including Phillips). You want a guy with a resume? Well, you had Palcic (who nobody on this board seemed to support), and now you got Mumme.

All good.

Its not all good but yes replacing the 3 Amigos who were an albatros around the neck of SMU's recruiting effort is a move in the right direction. Hiring coaches with exactly ZERO recruiting experience is also not near as good as hiring recruiting aces who have established reputations in the recruiting hotbeds like Chicago, Houston, DFW. June gets a C-, Larry Brown gets an A+ which I said the day he hired his first assistants. A year later they are proving their worth. But if you want me to applaud June not hiring 3 more 65 year retirees who do absolutely nothing in recruiting then BRAVO for hiring Daniels. June Jones doesn't get it-Larry Brown is about to show the SMU community how it is done in College sports. Now back to your Cheerleading for the Football team. Its not September yet.
