Hoops wants his teammate JaQuan Newton, so it's a leverage. Get the kid to SMU on a fball ride, make Jaquan more likely to come to SMU for hoops. Meanwhile, hoops gets a burly walk-on that has good athleticism and length

Why is everybody ignoring the quote below that was in the second link in the first post of this thread?
"A couple of schools actually offered me to play both, but, you know, college is hard. UMASS, Ohio, and SMU offered me to play both," Custis said. "[SMU head coach] Larry Brown came to an open gym and offered me a basketball scholarship before I had one in football, basketball was first."

Custis said the academic rigors of playing two sports would likely be too much for him to consider it, but agreed that the temptation to play the sport he first loved (football) is certainly there. Telling by some of the dunks he threw down, Custis choosing the gridiron is basketball’s loss.
