Pretty harsh comments for the #4 total offensive player in the nation. And that is against at least one top 25 team.

Not harsh. Uninformed. I'd love to hear a sports writer say, I don't know. Haven't been paying attention.

while he is playing much better-his QB Efficiency Rating is pretty much average. 1 TD and poor Yards per attempt/catch should also be considered for balancing out the Big picture. He is not hitting passes downfield. Until he does that he wont be getting much acclaim as more than an average college QB

Wonder what he would have done with Sanders, AR, DJ, and Beasley. We would be having a very different conversation, IMO.

Agreed, you can't discount wide receiver play and o-line protection. While the WR's have performed better this year and I like the strides that Joseph has made, he doesn't have enough playmakers getting separation and going up and making great catches, e.g. Manziel's WR's.

The statement was uninformed and dumb, but so is the DMN on almost everything.

I saw in today's DMN I think that Gilbert's Yards per catch was ranked something like 109th in Country

This raises some questions for me. I know that there are ways to lead a receiver which will help the yards sometimes but am I old fashioned in saying that completing the pass is the main thing? You get 0 yards for an incomplete pass and a lot of yards after the catch are a product of the scheme and the receiver's ability. This stat means that our passing plays are not as successful as 108 others. Gilbert has only some of that blame.

Personally I think Gilbert is having a very accurate start to the year and I hope it gets better from here

A lot of the passing plays called have ben short passes. That isn't GG, that is what is called by the coaches and then the reads executed by both GG and the receivers. Though the yards per catch are not impressive, the completion rate is. That indicates that both GG and the receivers are seeing the same thing and make the in sync reads. That indicates far better execution.
As to JM playing only one half against Rice, he also has a complete game against SHSU and Alabama. So he has 2 &1/2 games compared to just two for GG. And does one really think SHSU is as good or better than MSU?

SHSU soundly beat MSU last year in playoff 38-16

Manziel didn't play the 4th quarter versus Sam. So that's 9 quarters for Manziel and 8 for Gilbert.

At least Gilbert isn't out there simulating autographs, money counting, and kissing his bicep. Kid is an amazing talent, but extremely easy to dislike.
