I much as I wanted to see him go, he was a players coach and they appreciated him. I think a lot enjoyed playing for him. He changed some lives (Margus, etc)

We now have a pretty long list of NFL players.

Great Coach, Great Mentor... June Jones not only created good football players but also Great future fathers, husbands, and overall creater of Great Men! For all you june haters out there that are so quick to bash him and so soon to forget what he has done for SMU Football, I say FORGET YOU! The men who were blessed to be coached by this man know how special of a Coach/Man he is...Thank you Coach Jones! Mahalo and God Bless

Today is a sad day for SMU Football. It is hard to find a better man than June Jones. So much of my success can be attributed to his leadership, his loyalty, and the opportunities he gave me as a young man. As an athlete, you never forget the people who gave you your chances, those who had your back, those who encouraged you, those who fought for you, and those who helped make your dreams come true. I spent 4 years of my life learning and growing under Coach Jones. He has impacted the lives of so many of my brothers. He has put countless players in the Pros, and above all else, has molded some of the greatest men. It takes a strong and talented person to impact such significant change. It speaks volumes of his character that he was able to breathe life into a program that was literally dead. I respect Coach Jones for his poise, for his faith, and for his constant efforts to improve the communities he was a part of. He is a mastermind of the game and most certainly a legend. For these and so many other reasons, I will always appreciate and respect him. Thank you for the opportunity, thank you for the memories, thank you for your friendship, and thank you for your continued presence in my life. I am humbled that you continue to support me and keep in touch. I wish Coach Jones blessings in his future endeavors. I will always be a Mustang and a Steeler and I have Coach Jones to thank for that.

Agreed. One of the things that frustrated fans was June's bunker down mentality that sometimes created an us against them mentality of players vs fans when things were down. He never seemed to preach school loyalty but instead was always telling them to play for each other because no one else really understood him like they did. I hope these players are loyal to SMU because that's who ultimately gave them (and paid for) their chance.

There are a whole bunch of really classy tweets from pretty much all of June's ex players. It meant a lot to read them.

I hope SMU's current players reconnect with the program now that June is gone.

Not surprising to see JJ's former players acknowledging their gratitude to him. A lot of his former players, even Jeff George, have showed extraordinary loyalty and affection for him.

JJ shut out everyone that came before him.

In the 3 years I spent at SMU playing for Coach Jones, I learned so much about the game of football and many lessons in life. I learned that as a QB in the Run n Shoot, your arm 'never' gets tired. I learned how to approach and respect the game of football, and how to have fun even in the toughest of times. I have seen what it looks like to genuinely care for your coaching staff and your players. I saw a work ethic that didn't get near enough credit. I saw a man devoted to turning a program around, and I witnessed him pull it off.

What Coach Jones was able to do at SMU was nothing short of remarkable, and I am forever grateful to him for letting me be a member of his football team.

For the last month, I have been helping the SMU football team as a volunteer assistant. Coach Jones welcomed me back with open arms immediately after I reached out to him. I have been able to see from a new perspective just how many hours he puts into his work, and the passion with which he attacks each day. He is a great football coach that gave many young men like me the opportunity to play division 1 football. He is loyal, and treated us like pros! He will definitely be missed on the Hilltop!

I hope we get some ex players involved in the new coaching staff in some capacity or another. It would be good to have some letterman engaged in the day to day activities of the football program.
